KvR is brutal on EDM.
"I hate dubstep, this is great!" :hihi:

Im here cuz theres three pages...
Its not horrible, but its not that exceptional technically or stylistically really, imo. There is not enough attention paid to the mix or to empty space. Or, to what the track "is", aesthetically.
Forgive me for not just appreciating that a youngster did something 'oddball'.
He needs another ten tracks before Id make a call...

This track of his is much more savvy style wise imo-

In my mind, the younger a musician is the more points they get for having technical ability, and the less points they lose for any aesthetic oddities. A youngster is expected to maybe be lacking in training, but full of wild inspiration. If they display some technical ability, while showing aesthetic maturity they are beyond their years.

If a 16 year old is trying to copy their fav track, fine, they dont know any better, theyre learning, etc.
If they pull it off well, thats exceptional.
If they come up with their own style, and pull that off with technical skill, well thats a rare genius.

So this track in the OP, to me, is technically average. Needs ten EQs.
Stylistically, its missing a mark, imo. I say that from an EDM point of view.
So it can be appreciated for being 'avante garde' work from a young talent, or it can be seen as immature experimentation. Our choice I guess. :hihi:

(Sorry for the negative ranting post. This Daft Punk album is slowly making rage.)

Life in plastic, is fantastic....

This is just too clean sounding, and generic, could be any TV commercial....

How to make sounds less plastic -> For example "record the room", meaning instruments is mic'ed up and record sound coming out of amplifier

How to make song writing more interesting -> Listen to Symptom of the Universe by Black Sabbath, simple but very effective and atmospheric riff

I don't understand how some of you are talking about this as if the boy's gone out on a limb and made something experimental. This is about as vanilla EDM as you can get.

I'm a big dance music fan, including dubstep. But only when it's good.

Strong melody, and I must say, somewhat sweet for this genre of music. The kid definitely has ears, because melody is what always remains with you. But that was loud. Strong, sweet, but way too loud.

Ciao!
Great post! I agree. Whenever I get a sniff of this kind of shit I usually run myself a hot bath and slash my wrists vertically to make sure I can't be resuscitated.

But this is worse than usual actually and I don't want to take the easy way out. I think I need to torture myself for an hour or two before exit.

Strong melody? Oh yes! Don't get much stronger. Sweet? Oh yes, as sweet as the roses.

Yes he has ears. For the moment. But it can be arranged. As for it being too loud? Come on. It could go up a notch or two. I'd like to strap you to a chair and play it to you till your eardrums bleed. But I'm funny like that.

Ciao!

Have you ever tried just erecting your pole and slipping into the old bag?

Just saying...

who is saying that?
I spose I said that, in a way.
Not that it is purposefully exploring some new genre, but just that it misses the mark of 'popular' EDM style.
I guess that is arguable.
I dont like it, but it perks my ears up just because it sounds different.
To me, this does not sound like the five-hundred-tracks-a-day of "dubstep complextro" or wtf that it seems the kids of the world are churning out.
And thats a good thing.
This does show effort and skill. It does not sound like a pile of Live presets.

Who could this be compared to style wise in popular edm?
To me, this track has the hallmarks of a non-edm-fan musician "trying EDM".
i.e. Too busy, melody progresses to fast and complex, no focus on percussive parts.

I make edm. No offense.
I actually view it like someone showing up to a dive bar and wearing a sport coat.
Youre looking for a piano and we gots a juke box. :P
