"Stria" is the title of a very important composition by John Chowning and I would like to say that this computer music piece is the manifest of Frequency Modulation technique applied to audio synthesis, invented by Mr. Chowning himself. Stria app is a very little tribute to that great person and also to Max Mathews who was the inventor and (grand) father of the well known Music-n sound synthesis language generation (Stria engine is Csound for iOs based). Among the different implementations of this type of language, Csound (developed for the first time by Barry Vercoe at MIT Media Lab), is certainly one that has grown enormously in recent years. Thanks to Victor Lazzarini and Steven Yi for Csound API for iOs. At the same time, Stria was musically inspired by some interesting ideas about the use of tuning systems. I am deeply grateful to Walter Branchi, whose great knowledge of the tuning systems has prompted to me the main guidelines of this project. This work is also dedicated to him. Eugenio Giordani

Overview

Stria is essentially a sound synthesizer working in real time, the generated sound is mainly composed as a time continuous bands of frequencies using concurrently types of sound synthesis and manipulation:

a) Simple FM synthesis
b) Additive synthesis
c) Granular-like synthesis concepts d) Wavetable synthesis basis
e) Subtractive-like synthesis

We can think Stria as a virtual bank of oscillators and relative amplitude envelopes, generated continuously and overlapping in time (note blast). A controlled timer triggers "notes" (in a granular fashion) using two main parameters:

Event Rate (rate at witch notes or grains are generated) Event Duration (time lasting a single note or grain object)

The main parameters of Audio Generator are accessible via Tools Bar item i.e. Stria Parameters.

1) Volume
2) Frequency Spread
3) Event Rate
4) Event Duration
5) Mixture Components 6) Mixture Grid Step
7) FM Modulation Index 8) Wave Source Morph

the app was sent to Appstore for review.
so - soon ...

and yes -
it has audiobus/copy-paste/dropbox/midi support !

Price: like iDensity and iPulsaret.

For iOS 5 and 6.

Bump!

It's in the app store, now. Sounds great! :-)

I had to access the app store page through an appzapp link, as the store can't find it through their search function, yet.

yep -
it's out allright :)

A few questions, please:

Is Stria an instrument - that is, a signal generator - or a signal processor? From the text so far, it seems to be a sound manipulator, for shaping and combining sounds to produce new sounds, not unlike say Alchemy in terms of what you'd use it for; am I misunderstanding? This is a middle-of-the-audiobus-chain app?

Do your other apps fit the general category of shapers, rather than makers (source) or recorders (destination)? If not, how do they contrast with Stria? Are the three apps intended to work together? If so, how do YOU see them relating in terms of work flow?

For Stria's general category, what same-category apps do you expect Stria to stand against/next to? The reason I ask so specifically is because I need to be careful, and not get too many apps that are too similar...so, I try to find out if it's a cow or a horse. :hihi:

Have you considered an introductory sale - such as 'get all three for $20, limited time only'?

Stria is quite unique. The way you play it and the rest.
( its sound reminds me of NI Absynth - but ofcourse - Stria is not that complexe and versatile ! )

For short - it's a synth with a chain of suitable exotic effects ( not regular ones ) - it is not a sampler or an fx processor !

You can use it as sound playground and for cinematic soundscapes/ambient music / experiments !

And the price - it's priced as 1 small pizza :) so ...

Thanks so much for the detailed reply, you have helped me!

Re: the price, I was not complaining! I was thinking more about how I've never heard of your apps before you began this thread - even though I (try to!) keep up with this stuff.

"Is anyone using these? More attention, more exposure needed!!" were my first reactions, and it occurred to me that such a "intro price mini-event" (there've been others 'to celebrate our new toy!') would increase chatter about your work - drawing attention, iTunes store reviews and more new customers for EACH app by getting your work in more hands, fast...and therefore into more music in more ears. Which, of course, would mean new customers, more reviews, bigger buzz, greater success....

The main question I have next, I asked before: how do you imagine Stria, Density and Pulsaret being used together? Related: in what ways are the three apps similar, and in what ways are they different? Not from a programmatic standpoint, but as musical tools? What needs/production slots do you see them filling
