All this time i have been using Live builtin EQ to boost with, are there better alternatives with some analoge warm? I feel Live EQ is a little harsh to my ears.. and i have heard dont use it for boosting, only cutting...?

If in LIve 8, try high-quality mode. If Live 9, it's a different EQ to the old one and should be fine for most things.audiohouse wrote:All this time i have been using Live builtin EQ to boost with, are there better alternatives with some analoge warm? With boosts they generally want to be quite wide. Don't use a high Q value.

SonEQ has nice musical properties when boosting (or cutting)

son eq and leftover lasagne pushtec are my go-to boosting eq's. both very 'musical' (ie. doesn't sound harsh) even with high amounts of boost.

There's a few I like to use.
DMG Audio Equilibrium
Flux - Epure II
SPL - PassEQ
Overtone - PTC-2A Pultec
SKnote's - EQ1 - passive EQ
The last 2 are very cheap but very good quality.

My 'best-of' freeware:
Luftikus-passive EQ style. Lovely high boost. Smooth.
Ignite Amps PTEq-1a. Pultec style. Nice valve modelling, hard to make it sound bad.
Variety of Sound Boot EQ mk 2. Can carve your low end into all kinds of interesting shapes.
Variety of Sound Thrillseeker XTC. Half parallel EQ, half exciter. Great for pulling sounds to the front of the mix. A little goes a long way.
SonEQ. Good general purpose EQ with bags of character if you crank it.

Waves H-EQ. Has curves from all the major EQ's that have been modelled. Plus mid-side mode and the ability to dial in the exact amount of THD. Find it ridiculously quick and easy to use and get good results with.
Also 2n'd on SonEQ.

Analogue In The Box Mammoth (Manley Massive Passive) is absolutely brilliant in doing HF boosts. My most used plugin for this task.
Very close second is DMG Audio Equilibrium set to the "flat top" peak mode and a wide Q (and 100% "flat"). It's incredible! You can get away with ridiculous boosts at frequencies that can sound very nasty with an ordinary EQ.
A.O.M Tranquilizer seems to be very good for slight boosting tasks as well. You don't even notice the boost happening until you go over board.
Cheers!

Strange as it may sound (pun not intended...), I have found Equilibrium actually inferior to DDMF's ColorEQ at (what seemed to me) the same settings - as far as flat top is concerned. I have bought ColorEQ long time ago and never really used it. it is only after it became free that I have tried it again, and learned to appreciate its non-trivial curves. it produces an extremely pleasant top end, without a hint of harshness. I suppose those curves were migrated to IIEQ v3 later on, but I adore ColorEQ's simple and dead easy interface (and operation).bmanic wrote:Very close second is DMG Audio Equilibrium set to the "flat top" peak mode and a wide Q (and 100% "flat"). Cytomic designed EQ Eight for Live 9 it's an analogue emulation type of EQ you won't find any better for sound quality but I prefair DMG Audio Equlibrium which is on par for sound but far more options. In Equlibrium you can flat top the boost so it doesn't resonate. You can also design an EQ with Equlibrium to your liking.
