am I the only person on the internet who doesn't like the new Daft Punk stuff?

I've listened to the whole album, and other than the song "Contact," it's really boring!

I don't care if they've used the most expensive studios and gear, the most famous session musicians and guest stars, I don't care if it's quantized or nor or perfectly produced. If it's boring, it's boring.

And why would I need to listen to it "in context?" I wasn't going to clubs when their other albums came out and I loved that music. It was exciting and fun and rewarding listening.

RAM is a sham.

Luckily I didn't like their old stuff either.

its easy to see how some dont like this. especially if they have grown up on a staple diet of electronic house music.

for those that have been thru many styles including west coast rock and soul they will enjoy more.

i guess if they had taken this long to make another house album people would blame them for "not advancing"

Daft Punk have won a whole other audience now.

The hype may have helped their new album, but it was a bold move and I think they deserve the kudos. In a grooveless world, having Nile Rodgers on a rhythm track is something to pay attention.

Any attempt at EDM that doesn't sounds like EDM is valid, IMO.

I really like the Giorgio Moroder's speech :)

The problem to me is not that the album sound like "EDM" or not, is that it sounds like many old thing while bringing nothing new, just smells like un-inspired ripping of the past.

At least four tracks made me remember of mash-up of 2 oldies togethers, and I don't know the 70s (or 80s) enough to not be sure the other track are not also big copies of older hits.

So for all the 70s and 80s fan this album is a shame. They should have done the same style if they liked it, but original tracks for a changing. When I listen to this I can't stop myself to think about these past songs, and I would like to hear them instead of this poor copies saturated with badly distorded always-the-sames vocoders. My humble opinion.

+1 Same here :P

I guess, logically, that could mean I could like the new stuff though, if those who likes the old stuff, don't like the new stuff  :hihi:

I found this statement in the media to be particularly annoying and in a sense, elitist.
It's actually downright insulting in my opinion.

Bullshit.
It's bad/uninspired/uncreative/boring song writing, no matter, what "rules" you are applying, which styles you heard/like or in what "context" you listen to it.

It's bad/uninspired/uncreative/boring song writing.
It's like music without its core ... without a soul.
Which is ironic because of all the "real players, real instruments" hype surrounding it.
It sounds dead, without any emotions.

(For the most part at least.)

There's more human feel in most chiptunes I've heard.

Modern marketing: it's a trap!

I feel a little bit dirty for having participated in this thread.

Genius marketing, really ... :(

I keep picturing 35 year old housewives in the US, who have "heard" of "techno music", finally sitting down to enjoy some, cuz they heard about this new group that is going to save music...

I can only hope to hear of fantastic live shows coming out of the impending tour.
And by fantastic, I mean floor stomping, not sequins and glitter and shiny helmets.

I got a SMS today from the local record store that my pre-ordered Daft Punk album has arrived. I didn't want to pre-listen to it but after reading all negative opinions here I just had to. I so love the songs! I was afraid it would be too much Tron and it turns out it's not even close - phew! I can't wait to put this record on the platter :)

I've been through west coast rock, soul, east coast rock, southern rock, classic rock, punk rock, funk, R 'n B, jazz, blues, classical, hip hop, post-punk, power pop, rap, bluegrass, psychedelic, electro, and many more countless genres, and I enjoyed it less.

It was boring.

That's what I got from it. Several of the songs disappeared into the background, it was uninspired and un-engaging.

It basically sounds like a bunch of uninteresting kitschy euro disco songs with some talented session musicians playing on them.

I'm getting a pretentious vibe from the whole thing, it sort of bothers me. I can think of several 'laptop' musicians who could have made a vastly better album if they were given the same budget and 8 years.

Thus far it looks like a lot of people like this album out of spite of Skrillex or EDM. I'm going to bet in 6 months people won't ever want to hear this schlock again. Even the single 'Get Lucky' got extremely old quickly.
