Morphine (an additive synth by Image Line) can make great pad sounds, too. Harmor can, too, because it is driven by additive synthesis.

For pad sounds I would either go for an additive synth or for a wavetable synth...

(BTW, currently Foehn-Sturm on our Bavarian mountains... :D )

So hold on to your MIDI controller so you won't get blown away :D

If using a VA, it should at least have two independent filters. But somehow even good VA pads simply sound different than wavetable pads... Can be a good or a bad thing :)

I think THE Richman's solution is the Wavestation, the poor man's is Wusikstation (I love it), and the broke man's Zyn. All are excellent choices, though I'd get Wavestation before the other two if at all possible (I love the demos, but can't get it at the moment XD)

I got my Wavesation EX for 300 Euros including a RAM card...
Current second hand prices are usually not higher.

The plugin is much cheaper:

All Korg plugins are also available as 64-bit versions now.

The Wusikstation maybe uses a comparable synthesis method but the sounds are not identical.
For example it will be difficult to fully emulate the samples/single cycle waves and the FXs. As the Korg plugin is quite cheap it should be no problem to buy the "real thing".

I find that prodigius and its sister synth poly 2106 are cool prodigius is also great for its leads mostly.

Zynaddsubfx is cool among the free synths but I have had problems using it on my systems in the past will need to try it on my new system now.

Other free ones worth mentioning HG Fortunes many free synths, Dune CM/be, Rhino cm, Zebra CM, alchemy cm which has 150 more presets than regular alchemy player if you get the zinio version of Computer magazine, There is a thread on here to get $50 in credits that is active again. I just signed up and got the latest CM and a few other mags.

Also free to try Plex, Fluid from plugin index and tube ohm, augur, podolski, tyrell n6 and sonata. Almost forgot Proteus VX it has some nice pads and lots more as well.

As for commercial Synthmaster is on sale now here

I think if your going to get korg wavestation you should snag that 61 key controller they put out that uses mini keys.

the whole korg legacy bundle is included free with that deal. I had them all once before and they are something I will snag again,

Rapture and the galbanum piscis preset pack is cool as well but I think you can snag synthmaster for about the same money and then preset bundles are cheap for synthmaster.

Rapture came with my daw sonar producer so I am a fan of that synth and mostly for pad work.

There are 2 or 3 preset bundles that people put out for it that I like and I plan on getting those soon.

MY choice would be to snag synthmaster first since it can do pads and more then add the daw sonar producer if you need a daw and that way you can get rapture Z3ta and dim pro which all have great pads and atmos. Z3ta is very cool and that way you have a free synth bundle out of the deal. Th.ese other synths included with Sonar are okay but those are my favorites.

Then snag the 61 key controller and get all 5 of the korg legacy synths.

of course Native Instruments komplete is on my radar now as well as GForce Minimonsta.

Which instruments do you use? There are TONS of great pad sounds available.

The first obvious easy choice is omnisphere if you have the budget and a powerful machine with plenty of ram.

For algorithmic type pads, the now discontinued albino was my favourite of all time.. So i am replacing it with predator which is superb for pads also. RP blue and blade also fantastic for pads.

wow i don't know where else to begin as there are just so many options.. do you want fancy with little arps and patterns, or just nice bread and butter smooth pads?

Anyway, i am a bit of a pad freak so hopefully can give some good suggestions. It was a fair question and i don't know why you got a troll response straight away.. that was really weird but there's many of us here who can and will help :)
I have 4 GB RAM, and I had Omnisphere but I desinstalled because was many space on the HD.

I forgot all about HG Fortune. Which is horrible of me, because they are awesome, and he is awesome, and tends to put out NFG's pretty regularly. Whoops.

I was thinking of the PPG v.2 as well, either in its fan emulated form, or the official v3 VST. But it only works for cold, simple sounds (still love it, though. Long live the 80's!)

Plex is weird as well, but when used well... :)

Again with Fluid!
