Become familiar with DMCA takedown notices. Be prepared to issue them frequently.
For more devious mechanisms, seed torrents with a version that contains entirely silent samples but is otherwise complete. And password protect the archive so the downloader has to spend some time cracking it before finding out the file is useless.

lock them into proprietary format, like UVI (and suffer from lower user base...).johnwoo wrote:I want to create some midi and samples packs , I have some good ideas , but im afraid to do this , because i don't know how to protect them from being freely distributed .
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

Well ... forgive me to say this but the question is really somewhat naive, considering that piracy and copyright protection is obviously one of the main issues every software (and music-selling) company has to face, and that thousands of people in the industy are struggling against it, and really only a few have found ways to give their products a really good protection, and if they did, it was probably with a lot of skill and effort. As a small producer, you are highly unlikely to give your products a good protection, and if you try, it is quite likely that you'll have a hell of a lot of work with it, and spend a lot of time with this issue which you originally wanted to spend on making interesting products.
Taking that into account, the best way to get something out of your offerings as a small producer without knowledge in the copy protection area is probably to try and build a userbase of people who acknowledge your effort and are willing to pay for what you offer - even if they could download the same thing illegaly.

to refrain Streifentier: ignore the pirates and offer good price/performance ratio and you will find loyal customers, who are willing to pay and who don't share the files with people, who don't pay.

Spend more time in making good products that people actually want to use instead of worrying that somebody wants to pirate it. With that in mind, maybe you can try to make money on different ways with your product. Advertisement, services (paid or free), community tools and forums, youtube, etc.
Sometimes giving away your product can make you more money then selling it. By giving up already you will obviously not make any money at all. So if you think you have a great idea, just do it. Stop worrying about things like piracy until you have a great product. People are willing to pay for good products, don't assume "we" all are pirates or bad people in general.

Just make a great product for an affordable price and spread the word on the relevant audioforums. If you do a good job there are people who will show support.

Begin with a small library with an inexpensive price. So the people can see that you sell quality samples, and you can build up a good reputation. Then you can make some bigger libraries, too. Step by step.
But making a 2 GB sample library with a big price while nobody knows you, would be a bad idea...
