One might also ask what kinds of sounds or features you are missing on your existing synths. That could narrow down your choice.
I guess one thing I'm missing is FM, like FM8 or something like that would be real different.

Or a Harmor or Iris type of synth, not sure how much they go for 2nd hand, or if they go on sale once in a while.

As much as I, in theory, love this synth, I couldn't recommend it without a serious doubt. There is a serious bug in my DAW (Studio One), where you can't adjust modulations once the sequencer is running. You will remove the dot instead. Stop sequencer, close and reopen the GUI to make it work again - workflow killer in a synth that is aimed on ease of workflow. In another DAW, most of the bottom tabs are not showing up at all.

I also just installed it on my machine again. Took about 5 days until I could reactivate it, including support taking 3 days to even react with "you got it working yet?", like I could magically activate it by some miracle, after getting errors before, followed by "just tell me your e-mail" - "dude, I'm using it the whole time, it's also connected to your bug tracking system". :?

I have Loomer's String and I have to say that I much prefer Full Bucket's The deputy Mark II (which is free).
Can't agree with you there. Loomer String has a presence that The Deputy just seems to lack...

Tricky-Loops wrote:Harmor is a really great synth and still on sale at JRR Shop (and there are many other great synths & effects from Image Line on sale).
I had tried the demo of Harmor, and liked the sound and features, but there was a weird graphic bug where part of the screen would be missing after opening some menus.

I think it was Harmor anyway... :? it's been a while since I had checked it out, maybe it was updated and doesn't do that anymore.

I cannot think of a better sounding and more flexible synth...

There are plenty of of free VSTi's out there to possibly satisfy you while you sit on that cash and look for Zebra2 in the marketplace. Could probably even get it for $130-$140. ;)
I might get a bit more than I thought I would and Zebra2 would be great either 2nd hand or through that dino program. 8)
you keep coming back to this...it's clear this is what you want, so just get it 8)

Any of the Korg synths.
Getting Polysix, and MS20 for 100 is the best, as using the included Legacy Cell with those is just great.

Post

Korg Polysix (or MS-20 or Mono/poly) + TAL U-NO-LX = $90

zeta+ 2 = $99

surge = $99

Some good ideas in here, thanks guys.

Predator. There seem to have been lots of people selling it in the Marketplace recently for 90$ or so.

Keep saving and get Zebra. It has upgrades coming and it uses hardly any CPU and still sounds the best. Very good for learning on too and loads of preset banks to ad to it.

i'm not gonna shoulder all the responsibility for where you spend your money, but as i said, you already have more than enough stuff to make music...so rather than just keep collecting, maybe just go for what it is you really want

i regret having bought stuff simply because it fit a budget that was eager to be spent, or on no-brainers that i thought were a great idea until i added up how much i spent on these little things that meant i couldn't get the things i really wanted

DO IT !!
