Can't seem to nail this kick drum;

Any specific way that it's processed?

Thanks!

Saturator is the plugin, that you are looking for. It's basically a 909 kick with the saturator.

here's one from pointblank that shows what the saturator does.

Perfect, thank you very much! Only problem is, I use Logic :( is there an equivalent? I know Dale Howard does use Ableton, would be great if there is a way on Logic

Fabfilter's 'Saturn' plugin is my go to saturator, Soundtoys has the 'Decapitator'.

Heres a free one, that should get the job done (haven't used it myself)

Also, did a bit of googling:

"Check out the plug-ins under the section Distortion, bit crusher et rest. Bit crusher, even if the name sound crunching, could actually saturate like a tube saturator.

Some even use the Tape delay with 0 delay to get the tape saturation effects out from the plug-in. "

Thanks for your help! I've used the bit crusher but it's just too much, and yeah the tape delay is great for adding overall tape saturation, I use it when i'm mastering a track and wanting it to sound old skool! It just doesn't have the same gritty overall sound that I want.

I'll check out a couple of them programmes!

Maybe you can use it in parallel mode with the dry signal?

I tried Rombo lately on some 909 kicks @-18dBFS and I am really pleased with the results especially on higher settings. It's free so there is no excuse for not trying it out and after listening to your youtube sample I bet you will love it. :)

IIRC back in the 90's people used their 909s with a Mackie mixer and very hot gain to get this sound.

Thanks for the advice! Apart from the excuse I have is that I'm running Mac and not Windows unfortunately! :(

Hey, don't worry. I took a quick look at Logics manual and spotted two stock devices that should be investigated further by you: Overdrive & Clip distortion. The Clip distortion thingy has a mix option (dry/wet control) so if the effect is way too heavy dial back in more dry signal. It's all about finding the sweet spot. :)

You could also play around with the other distortion plugs but give those two aforementioned a try. :)

Cheers,
Sebastian

the bitcrusher has a wet/dry mix option too, it's just hidden 'under' the plug-in. click on the small arrow on the left bottom corner of the plugin to see it.

for that kick sound I'd use any distortion/saturator plug, if logic's distortion plug doesn't do it, try this freebie:

set everything else to off and use the tube+mech controls to taste. the plug will give your kicks some body&punch even when you don't want that fully distorted sound when used carefully.

different guitar amp models can give you different flavours too, logic has the amp modeller & pedalboard for that.
