Hi,
I'm trying to learn some basic stuff about electronic music, dubstep in particular, and am looking for free synths that have good presets for attempting dubstep. Does anyone have some favorites they would suggest? And/Or some good preset packs they would recommend?
Thanks for any help with this stuff!
David

The newest version of Synth1 is actually pretty capable of some nice dubstep basses with practice. Set the pitches of the oscillators wide apart, use one of the built-in distortions, plus the FM knob, for some firey, metallic wobbles, etc.
EDIT:
Since you asked about presets, I have a free set of 35 dubstep patches for Synth1 here:

Hands up for Atlantis!! I'm still absolutely sad that Jeremy Evers did abandon the project. The Atlantis synth could have become the greatest synth ever if it would have been re-worked.Davias wrote:Atlantis filter is awesome !! +1
But the Atlantis FX unit is great, anyway.

I looove Atlantis, and it can scream like hell!
Here is a track with only one instance of Atlantis, until after the break, where there is a MrPiz Aliaspro, it's easy to recognize, it's the "horribly" aliasing one.
And only free VSTs beside those ones: Noamp, noamp, and an other noamp:

It is not reaaally dubstep, but I guess there is a bass, and it is agressive.

I find these free synths helpful for the basics.

I have a red pitch dropping bass vsti named Subsonic that I can't find in the KVR database nor online. I even tried a Google color search. The only contact in the SE info box is 2te@astercity.net.
You also need noise makers, chip emulators, trance synths, and virtual analog synths. Really, once you have the basics, almost anything will go on top of or next to it. That's one of the things I like about Dubstep.
You'll still need to bit crush, distort, eq, formant filter, filter sweep, compress, chop, stutter, pitch shift, time shift, render, and repeat. I find that mastering each track almost every time I render it gives me a lot of punch. Still, I have a lot to learn. Here's a brief experiment.

I had to lower their bit depth with this.

Thank you! I downloaded them but haven't opened the zip yet. Someone told me all I have to do is extract them and put them in an empty folder, and then run the initsettings.exe Is that all there is to it? The folder soundbank 00 has stuff in it, but the other folders just have one text document dummy.txt Does that need to be removed or does it matter? What's it there for? I also downloaded the zip of feeltune presets. Should they all go in a different folder? If the stuff is in different folders will all the presets show up on the same dropdown menu when it comes time to use them, or will I have to look around through different folders individually somehow?Xenos wrote:The newest version of Synth1 is actually pretty capable of some nice dubstep basses with practice. Music Hacker has a trendy sounds howto using freeware stuff series. There's a chapter about Synth1 and Dubstep:
Also, there's a video tutorial "teaching" how do use Soundgoodizer to fatten up drums, bass, etc. If you're not a FL Studio user, try the freeware Youwashock to get the same result, which shows how to turn an ordinary bass patch in a powerful Dubstep growl:

And your small sound bank is fantastic and made me see some great potential with Synth 1 for Dubstep. I'm building more patches for the sound bank. Synth 1 is amazing and free and does Dubstep with ease.Xenos wrote:The newest version of Synth1 is actually pretty capable of some nice dubstep basses with practice. You even showed that no formant filter was necessary!
