I'm in need of a good filter plug-in. Any suggestions?

So many good options. Are you looking for something that has a lot of complexity, filter types, and modulation options, or something simpler but focused on high quality filters? Also, do you have a budget in mind?

I own a lot of filter plugins, but my go-tos are SoundToys FilterFreak and FabFilter Volcano 2. Cytomic's The Drop was very nice when I tested it, but I'm not sure where it's at in terms of availability - definitely worth looking into, though.

If you're looking for GREAT free stuff, I can recommend the Engineer's Filter by RS-MET and ReaEQ from Cockos...

FabFilter Pro-Q, FilterFreak, FilterBank are all great for me. The Drop will get my money once the full version is released.

I need something versatile with options.

I know next to nothing about filters, so if people could explain why they like a particular filter plug, I'd appreciate it.

I think the Drop will be the 'go to' vst filter when it's done, it's shaping up very nicely. I can't wait for it to be released!

I prefer hardware filters to be honest (EMU's and Moogerfooger, etc).

Some vst filters I quite like are:

Soundtoys Filter Freak 1 & 2 - these are some of the best emulations I've heard.
Wow filter from sugarbytes - Some decent modulation options.
Sonlaksis TBK (or whatever its called) - Limited, but sounds nice.

Quadfromage - Sounds ok. But has great modulation options.

Never really liked the sound from FF Volcano at all tbh, but it has a great interface and lots of options. Although, I still don't regret selling mine.

I'm sure, there's quite a few I haven't tried. So, I'll be watching this thread with interest.

PS - I wish Dave from DMG Audio would do a filter as it'd be class!!:)

In terms of best sound, I think The Drop is the hands down winner. There's only one filter model with a hipass/lowpass option and a more CPU friendly version, but there will be additional filters coming soon. It sounds unbelievably good. It also has some sweet options.

on the freeware side of life, try the atlantis filter. i can highly recommend this thing. a bit unknown i think but also a very flexible filter is the qwah2 from concretefx. qwah2 was commercial but look at this

concretefx made the fxpack free with all serials. the other tools are also the bomb.

on the commercial side of life i can suggest filterbank3 or bifilter from tone2. both have tons of filtertypes and a build in distortion module. if you like it complex and mad try the mwobbler from melda production. it has two filters with drive and saturation modules. thousands of filtertypes and a "ready to get mad" modulation engine. custom and standart lfos, envelope-follower, evelope (adsr)...

on the magware side of life you can try diversionfx or philta cm. both have really, really great sounding filters.

Best ones i used and still use are the Uad Moog ,Cytomic the Drop , Tone 2 Bifilter and if u have pro tools the moogerfooger bundle is not bad .. somebody mension that he don't like volcano 2 sounds me neither it can do nice effects but is not that good as the drop and the uad moog they are monsters in the real way listening to them u will not feel that much the need of hw boxes in some points..
