For instant gratification, FilterFreak often does it for me. It's out-of-the-box sound is among the best and it's very controllable, however...

For sound-design purposes, I like this one not least because of that Ohmforce bonkersness that runs through their plugins. You've got pretty flexible routing with this, a lot of performance features as well as freely assignable LFOs and envelope followers. On top of that, it has more flexible set of filters, including comb, than most other plugins.

Yeah, Quad is great at special FX, you can really get some bizarre noises out of it. That's a nice example of it being used musically btw.

I'd really like to see the Fab Filter guys revamp Volcano, as I think it has awesome potential. But as a creative filter the sounds not quite there for me.

I feel that filters are the one area where hardware has the advantage I'm sad to say.

I do think there's a few developers out there that could really make a good filter. Andy of course is one!

PSP's N2O or the original Nitro have some very useable filters . MFM is another good one , plus it gives you a lot of other options , but the only downside to both these plugins are the rather crappy UIs .

And the Drop is the s*** .

Haha, yes you are going to have every filter thrown out there and here are my two suggestions as well.

I think FabFilter's Volcano is a Filter goldmine, but if you are looking for something simple, their Simplon is also just great for your standard/basic needs.

I also own Etch by FXPansion. I also really like this filter and if I could say that it sounds "analog" I would, but I have no idea what a real analog filter sounds like. However, to me it sounds like this Filter is something that exists outside of my computer... like whatever it does to the sound, seems like it imparts some sort of external routing that adds some sort of vibe, I just cannot explain. It is super flexible as well like FabFilters Volcano.

It is hard to say which GUI I like best, but they both have their pluses and minuses.

If Etch was not on sale in the past I would have never bought it... but before you go spend money, check out all the free options out there, check to see if any of your synths also double as an FX processor.

I'll definitely check out the free ones first (those are all I can afford at the moment), but I'm still interested in the commercial filters for future reference.
