i'm looking for a good solo oboe, preferably without needing to buy a huge orchestral library.

I have EWQL SO, but am looking for something else.

any ideas?

Not really what you asked for but...

I really like the reeds in "Garritan Personal Orchestra 4". Especially the clarinets and oboes.

I play a wind synth (EWI)into GPO4 which is a sample library running in Aria that has a lot of control over tone, dynamics and stage location/ambience. I believe it goes for around $150, but has been on sale for $100 occasionally.

If you plan to write for orchestral instruments, this library is consistently nice sounding without breaking the bank.

VSL's French oboe sample library, or the Full version if you want many more articulations and don't mind the price. "Single Instruments" section on the site. That's the best you can get.

Sample Modelling is working on an oboe for their next release. I have no idea how far along they are though, or how long you might have to wait.

Otherwise VSL French Oboe is highly regarded.
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

the VSL extended costs only a little more than 8Dio, the latter having a pretty limited articulations set in comparison.

I'll second martygras on Garritan Personal Orchestra, I've used it on some tv spots as a lead melody voice, and some folks in the office who sing with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus were very impressed. The brass, not so much! :hihi:

I also use Miroslav Philharmonik Orchestra layered with it to get a bigger section, and it sounds great by itself too. The lighter Classik version is on sale now at IK or eSoundz for $29, and features two solo oboes and two ensembles with several variations of each. It also has a version of the NICE CSR Hall reverb, which adds a lot. Check it out here:

on the site, the extended version seems un-buyable. only standard or full. not sure why. I like the extended articulations, especially the runs.

you cannot buy the extended without buying the standard. the bundle is 130 Euros.

the 8Dio looks to be quite clever in its programming, but the cuteness of all that isn't going to make up for the lack of portato, just basic things. it looks like it's made to use a lot of this 'dynamics' button as if it's going to be these other articulations but I would absolutely have to demo it extensively before I accept the premise, I'm very skeptical. He says in the video explaining the system how they won't do cross-fade velocity layers because you should have it in the sample but dynamics samples are being faked by their Modus Operandi with that 'dynamics' button. My bullshit filter pinged to the top then.

Edirol HD, its free and it's the best VST out there. Honestly, even better than the paid, oh and biggest plus interface super easy and fast to get down to business..

Both classics.

Try also 'Some Distant Memory' from Electronic.

I have a huge fondness for the sound of the oboe. :)

Why do people keep plugging garritan's GPO so much here? I really don't get it. I have it - it's a really dinky cheap sounding library. Its sounds are on par with a decent GM sound module - not much better than native instrument's short-lived Bandstand midi player VST. The only way the sounds are passable is if you work your compositions around the limitations of its sounds.

I've found several of the things in GPO very useful.

if one does not have much experience bringing things out in a mix, the stuff is generally going to be less useful I suppose.

the harps are fairly good. the vibes are good. the muted and 'lush' strings patches can be really effective.
some of it, such as this guy 'solo cello player #2' who started out kind of flabby, needs some extensive EQ, cuts, and like an exciter and send it to a good reverb.

excerpt, 2 cellos

I find the assertion that some Edirol thing is 'the best out there' hilarious though. Seems like I've seen that before here. :troll:
