I just don't understand that kind of fixation.
As we get older our hearing will, either we like it or not, deteriorate.
So however much analog mumbo-jumbo that is thrown into the mix, that will affect how it is perceived by the listener.
Beethoven got deaf and composed with a stick between his teeth, feeling the tones by vibration.

Well, he does admit in the article that it's more of a philosophy/aesthetic thing. Not very humble about the digital part though, or even about MP3s. I don't think there is any documented case of someone accurately telling the difference in blind tests above the lowest bitrates.

that's a pretty extreme remark regarding mp3s, 'it's all garbage'. I would love to see him blind-tested, on whatever hi-fi system is the most expensive.
all audio reproduction is 'analog'; there is no 'digital' microphone... so the whole exercise is fraught with problems of language. I'm not sure how the process of getting something to the medium of grooved vinyl is supposed to ensure higher fidelity per se. it seems to me the desirability lies more in the realm of desired artifacts and an acquired taste for a quality of distortion...

Nice advert!
Can you listen to a £2500 LP while jogging in the park? That would be a quick way to waste some cash!
There is a time and a place for everything
Peace,
Andy.
p.s. please buy my expensive stuff.

I don't understand the analog fetish, either, and I grew up on analog gear. My advice is to just ignore it and worry about the far more disturbing KVR cat fetish.

I never got it either. It's always been about the music for me; the music doesn't get better or worse depending on the medium. Seems to me that folks like Mr. Hutchison somehow needed an outlet for their OCD. Jeez, I remember Neil Young's crusade against CDs in the 80s and 90s... what a waste of time and energy, all this gnashing of teeth and rending of garments. He should have practised the guitar more instead of wailing against a recording medium.
All recordings and playbacks of recorded material are artificial. If you want true fidelity, go to a concert.

I always think that the Beatles at the Shay Stadium was a fine example of wish fulfilment. An extreme for sure, but it shows how much we are capable of investing in our desires...

Actually they are both digital. They just differ in bit rate and bit depth. This proves the point that analog and digital can produce equivalent results at least as it is perceived by humans.ontol wrote:I prefer analog to digital and can easily tell the difference:
