go to the local radio station in your hometown with your cd, one packaged and one open, and your artist press kit. in a perfect world you shake hands with one of the dj's and leave it with him or her, but even if you just say hi and drop it off, I've found they're willing to listen or at least have a look.
then do the same at the university or college in your city, its easier to actually meet the radio people there. I ended up getting a late night interview on air and a couple song snippets. I didn't make full rotation but part of one of my songs ended up back ground muze for the morning show.
one other thing I did was go to my local pub that had live entertainment. they play random music while the band is off, hand the cd to the music guy. of course, if theres something you can do live, even better.

build up your online presence around those local things 1st, then try and grow it from there. theres nothing like real face to face stuff 1st, before the pig in a poke internet world.

good luck!
Hey man! Thanks for the info!

The new album is getting reviewed in the greek equivalent of Pitchfork so it's going to gain some traction from there. I have also released an OST album which is included with the limited edition of the book it was inspired from (so the first 500 copies of the book also include the album as a professionally-produced CD) and that album has already been mentioned on radio shows and local greek and cypriot blogs. So it's going pretty good locally so far!

You're right. I need to visit some local radio stations with some CDs too. :)

SomaFM needs only Dropbox, you must invite them (share the folder), this is described somewhere on their website.
If you always bought some plays on Jango, this needs a bit more work IMO.
The average "engagement" rate of all users is pretty low at roughly 10% (this includes ALL positive interactions with your profile) - I got this info from the Jango support guys. So, for every new fan it makes sense to write personally a message and invite him twice to like your Facebook page.
Facebook campaign is more efficient, because fans for similar artists will have a banner displayed. So if you setup as a similar artist eg. "David Guetta" Facebook will handle this so his fans will see your ads (you can setup 3 similar artists). Success and new fans depends on the style, the similar artists (should be fit the own style) etc.
I have sent the album to somaFM, now we wait. :)

I have never actually seen any benefits with Jango, I just thought it'd be something to try again since I'm more involved in actually promoting the album this time. I don't think I'll be using it a lot in the future.

I am definitely trying the Facebook promotion thing this time though.

Aah ;) Physically shipped or with Dropbox? I have no idea how it works with multiple tracks/albums

You will reach a broad range of new listeners... I remember to had over 1000 listeners of a track, which results in about 40 fans... But I cannot remember that some of this 40 fans could be moved to a Facebook fan :D I would say, this can be a piece of the whole thing but I would not expect too much.

It's not expensive and I remember with Reverbnation you can also cancel the promotion (the left budget is usable for new campaigns) if you see after 1-2 days that there are not the expected results or you have selected the wrong artists. With Reverbnation (I cannot say how it works with other distributors or directly with Facebook) you provide a song for free download on the landing page if a user clicks the add. So the deal is "you get a free song and like my page" ;)
With a campaign I've got 500.000 views, 177 fans clicked the ads and 50 fans interacted with me... this campaign runs 5 days for $35. But I think it's always a good idea to try different things because the results can be completely different.
We all know, with a very interesting Youtube video you can reach also many new fans... but... making an interesting video is not so easy :) But some guys having talent for video stuff (or having friends coming from the industry/study film or movie stuff) where a Youtube video can be the door opener.

I sent the album via Dropbox. It was really easy! The hard part comes later! :D :hihi:

I'm already running the Facebook promotion, it'll be interesting to see the results. I'm not setting my hopes too high so any result is not going to disappoint me. The experiment itself is exciting though! :D
