so how much of your host do you actually use? Myself it's probably pretty low, between 10 and 20%...I figured I would make a poll because the poll for how many hosts do you use made me think "how much of our tools do we use?"
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Which host :hihi:

How can people determine how many % of the features they use if they still don't know all features of their DAW? :?:

Post

I would guess around 30% or so.

Effects on tracks - not individual clips.
No automation on midi and hardly no editing either - what is recorded stays.
No free drawn automation.
No sidechaining.
No external effects - just some synths.
No video.
No surround sound.

Use daw pretty much like taperecorder with a mixer with sends for effects - feel like I scratch the surface only.

Yep my first thoughts exactly.

I've estimated/guessed I use between 40% to 50% of the features available. Admittedly a lot of features are not relevant or needed for what I need personally. I am not very advanced/high tech

I voted 80% for my current host. The only things in it I don't really use very much is the mastering section and the video features, and external insert FX.

If I was asked that question about Cubase 5 a few years back, it would've been about the same % because I never used the scoring features or video functions much but I did use just about every other feature. Although...there are some actions in the Cubase action list that I still to this day have no actual clue what they're for.

Great idea for a poll. I have Logic, which has as many "features" as any "pro" level DAW. I do 90% of what I do in Maschine and MPC Studio which have maybe half the features of Logic. Over the years all the players have added much bloat. I always like the more intuitive better than the more featured.

When I make music, I get "in the zone". I don't want the distraction of hundreds of options, I want the flow of simplicity and familiarity.

well perhaps further understanding of one's host's features will be the result of trying to answer the question

I think it is around 80% average between them... :)

I put down 80%+ (for my main DAW), but TBH I have no idea if that's in the ballpark. I don't usually think of my DAW usage in terms of percent of features, well, at least not directly. I think of them more in terms of how functional I am at the core level (e.g., knowing all my most-used commands and tools, the keyboard shortcuts for them, etc.) and how deep I can go without having to resort to the manual or some other resource. But, there are a lot of features in all DAWs that I'm aware of and maybe even somewhat familiar with, but have no use for. For example, Sonar's video editor - I've only used it a few times years ago, so I'm not an expert there, but I don't really count that against myself as not knowing my DAW inside/out, since it's irrelevant to me.

It really depends on what you use, some DAW offer much, others less,
how to evaluate this?
Always around 50%

Post

I put mine at 50-60%. When I want more out of it, it's there.

As long as the main features are intuitive and easy to use, I think most DAW's on the market cover about 80% of users needs, doesn't matter which one you pick. When you got special requirements is when you end up settling on one or if needed, two or three.

I think it is common that people don't fully explore their DAW feature sets enough before running to the next DAW that is going to be just right for them (in my unscientific interpretation of posts).

About 9 years ago I stopped trying others. Decided to learn how to use mine. So far have not run into an unworkable limitation for the type of music I make.

Sounds like you need full Pro-Tools w/hardware setup or perhaps Nuendo fully loaded on a Supercomputer!

:hihi:

Let me guess here....fun and easy?
