I think one reason behind that addiction is potential. One wants to be able to make every sound on earth so to speak, everything one has ever heard on other people's music. Of course, one rarely ever needs to tap that potential, but still... Being prepared for the day that never comes, like synth survivalists :D

I am going the opposite way now, selling some plugins and simply deleting the rest that I never use anyway. If I have not used a plugin in months, I will likely not miss it. I want to have no more than half a dozen synths and half a dozen effects in my folder. My DAW comes with its own effects, so I never deliberately bought effects, anyway. Sometimes effects are part of bundles, like with Chris Kerry's bundle. But I never used those effect plugins and I won't miss them.

But those cheap plugins (10 bucks or so) are not even worth selling.

Actually, I don't buy plugins to recreate sounds I've heard. The potential is in creating sounds no one has ever heard. That is the challenge. That is the fun. That is why I don't buy every VA emulation out there. I buy the synths with unusual or unique synthesis techniques.
This space has been unintentionally left blank.

I think some of us have two parallel hobbies: making music and collecting plugins. It just so happens that sometimes buying plugins is easier than and a welcome distraction to making music.

"I am Joe - and I too suffer from GAS."

In 1979, I took out a $3,000 loan to purchase keyboards. There were new and exciting synths coming to market. After outliving my welcome in the local music shop - I finally broke down and picked up a DX7, a Yamaha mixer and some speakers. The group I was playing with loved it. I loved it. That $3,000 is about $12,000 in today's dollars... counting for inflation. It also -- provided me with the DX7's limited (by today's measures) set of sonic capabilities. It was state of the art... was game changing.. but was expensive.

A few years ago... I picked up Apple Logic, a couple of keyboard controllers, and started buying AU instruments. Comparatively, I am spending pennies - and getting a BOATLOAD more sonic capabilities / and sounds. The keyboards are a load lighter than my original DX7 <- a system i finally broke down and sold last year.

GAS? Yes. And yes.. i realize I am one of those old farts, saying "we had it tough back in the old days" :) -- however.. there is some truth to that. GAS today, by any measure -- is an order of magnitude cheaper. Not only that - but the sound abilities of synths (software and hardware based), are just a lot more predictable, and offer richer textures.

it occurs to me that most of my purchases seem to be more purpose driven recently. This is a lot more constructive.

Jesus, after reading all this i thought i had problems with always checking out new VST's and stuff, turns out am not THAT bad, am actually kick ass :D

But keeping all those useless VSTs and stuff you don't use just have there laying for no reason - isn't that called hoarding ? :hihi:

Imagine how terrible a business writing VSTs and selling sounds sets or samples would be if project studio musicians only bought what they absolutely needed. The industry would go down the pan overnight :D
My music is a fusion of jazz and funk. It's called "Junk"

I love em,buy everything, have options, keep the Indie devs alive! Heck,we only live once and we can't take it with us.

The thing is I find having so many things I don't have to learn fully or even slightly on a deep level is a hinderence in many ways now. Each GUI is kind of a mystery in and of itself. :P

But yes, enjoy!

This, and even (the majority of) freeware plugs are accompanied by a more or less detailed manual. I would estimate that I haven't read more than 60 % of all manuals in my plugin folder... :-o

I haven't even read 1%... I guess that could be a major block in itself, LOL.

A machinedrum seems to have cured my GAS :)

Err.. no, it just flipped me to the more expensive hardware world

Comes down to what you're able to handle in terms of quantity. Seeing tutorial videos, plug-in folder including every developer on earth? :hihi: Well, I'm not that guy.

I had a huge blast with GAS back 2 years ago. Right now, I have a very simple guideline. Income = Outcome. Bought a synth? Sell a synth. Works for me at least. Along with a certain inner survey - Do I want it? Do I need it? What makes it different? Sound? Performance? Handling? Would I be even into without this deal / offer?
