when I do this, I'm not convinced that the V+ is not also the carrier.

I am quite sure that if you set the "Ext synth" fader to maximum V+ will not be the carrier.
The original synth got the same fader to use an external synth as a carrier.

I just tried a very simple setup with two test audio files. Those were provided during the Beta test of the Waldorf Lector vocoder.
The modulator is a spoken text (from the news i guess...).

Here is a screenshot of the setup (use "open in new window" to see the full size):

audio demo:
Xils V+_External Carrier Test 1

The keys in V+ are not played, only the two audio tracks are played through V+.

The "Ext Synth" fader is at 100% in this setup (same as i already proposed and used in my other example at the last page).
If i move it to 0 position the sound stops.

If i then press the keys in V+ the sound starts again, but it sounds differently as there should be an internal carrier now.

Can someone explain that for Studio One? :)

<OT> Not to hijack this thread but MVocoder is an awesome Vocoder too (but can kill your CPU when using many bands). V+ sounds completely different so they can't be compared anyway.</OT>

This is a step by step procedure of how to use Xils V+ with an extrnal "carrier" in Ableton Live 9:

1.) Create a track with the vst instrument, audio track or microphone input which you want to use as the "modulator"

2.) Add the Xils V+ FX VST to the same track (like a "normal" FX)

3.) Choose a vocoder preset like e.g. "VOC Water Vocoder IW"

Change some of the parameters according to the parameter settings at my screenshot (see below this text). Most important is to set the "EXT SYNTH" fader to maximum !

4.) create another track with an instrument or audio file for the "carrier".

5.) route the audio of the "carrier" track to Xils V+ in the first track.

6.) Set the side chain selector in V+ to the upper position (see screenshot)

7.) if you use VST instruments for the "modulator" and "carrier" you have to route a MIDI input to them to make a sound with those.
This could be either done directly at the "modulator" and "carrier" tracks or with another MIDI track that is routed to those.

8.) If everything is set up correctly don't forget to start playback at your DAW to hear the vocoder.

Here is a copy of the screenshot so you don't have to look at another post:

This is another setup with a vocal sample as the modulator and a VST synth (PPg Wave 3.V) as an external carrier:

UPDATE:
I am checking the setup with two VST instruments again. This seems to work like described and without triggering V+ by MIDI but if i also trigger the V+ by MIDI i get a different result. Not totally different, but another vocoder sound is layered.

XILS V+ in Studio One via Sidechain

track 1 : diversion
track 2 : sample

1) drop XILS V+ efx version on sample; select sidechain from menu

2) select 'Sends/Sidechain->XILS' from diversion mixer strip ; Select Sidechain/XILS V+ from the drop/down below Diversion

3) turn on 'Ext Synth' volume, switch 'Sidechain select' switch in XILS V+

I have now tested setups for Xils V+ in Reaper 4 (v4.402, latest version).

A.) Using an audio file as a modulator and the internal carrier of V+:

Image

steps:
- create a new instrument track with the Xils V+ VST plugin (not the intrument plugin)
- add a MIDI input to that track
- use a patch comparable to the example at the screenshot. The "EXT SYNTH" fader should be at 0.
- create a new track and load/add the audio file (WAV file) to it
- route the Xils V+ plugin to the master output
- route the track with the audio file to the Xils V+ plugin (see routing matrix at the screenshot)
- create a MIDI track at the first track (e.g. by recording notes)
- start playback

B.) Using an audio file as a modulator and another VST instrument (here PPG Wave 3.V) as an external carrier for V+:

Image

steps:
- create a new instrument track with the Xils V+ VST plugin (not the intrument plugin)
- use a patch comparable to the example at the screenshot. The "EXT SYNTH" fader should be at maximum.
- load/add the audio file (WAV file) to this track
create a new instrument track with the VST instrument plugin you want to use (here: PPG Wave 3.V)
- add a MIDI input to that new track
- in the Xils V+ plugin activate the inputs 3+4 at the plug-in pin connector like shown at the screenshot
- route the Xils V+ plugin to the master output
- route the second track with the instrument to Xils V+
- choose input 3/4 for the instrument (see "controls for track 2" at the screenshot)
- deactivate the MIDI output to Xils V+ (see "controls for track 2" at the screenshot)
- create a MIDI track at the second track (e.g. by recording notes)
- start playback

EDIT: I'll leave it to others to figure out how FL Studio works ...

Hi,

I just receive this track on our forum I'm glad to share.

Best regards

Hi folks.
I'm a great fan of xils lab.
Using mostly XILS soft synths, I have put together a brief track to show case the kinds of textures I love getting from these awesome instruments.

http://www.boxapixels.com/fin/XILS_Demo_Fin.mp3

If you're interested to know what's doing what....

XILS V+ -> string pads, high strings, vocal pad.
Synthix -> slow percussions, sweeping pitch pads, high-register bubble sequences, one layer of bass line.
XILS-3 -> Bass lines, fx.
PolyKB II -> square lead

Arturia Spark VDM -> Main rhythm

Logic Audio on a Macbook Pro.

Enjoy!
:)
