Hey guys,
I've been working on adding some WAVE editing function to my sampling/chopping software (BeatCleaver), and I'm curious to see what you guys think.
Does this approach look useful?
What other types of edits would you like to see?
I still have a lot of design work to do (eg. I have no idea how edit mode and the "slices" from the regular view should work together), so I figured now's a great time to just throw it all out there and see what people want before I keep working on it.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Albert

I don't have any personal need for a standalone editor but I really like what you're doing there, and how, the approach, the way the edit sections slide around like that. Very cool and (imo) pretty clever and logical.
I also like the name, "Beat Cleaver", that's a pretty damn cool and memorable name.
Really nice graphic design also.
May you have much success.

No concrete ideas right now but it looks good.
I picked up ReCycle awhile back and need to start learning that.
Will Beat Cleaver give me some capabilities that ReCycle doesn't have?

- More FX editoptions, like: EQ / filter / dist ( clip, fold, sat ) / crossfade / mirror ( whats on leftchan. goes to rightchan. ).
- Use editregions as slicepoints.
Cheers!

Hey been thinking about getting for a while... Any chance of your take on elastic audio? I realise that's probably not a possibility, but it doesn't hurt to ask right?

Hey Stephan,Stephan326 wrote:Also how about integration into JamDeck??
Batch editing could be cool and a good idea. It might be possible for me to make the batch editing based around macros of commands or something like that. For example, you could apply the edits that you make to one file to a bunch of different files. We'll have to see how long it takes for me to finish the current editing features though. Batch editing could be a good candidate for BeatCleaver 1.5 maybe?
There's a new JamDeck 1.1.8 update out btw, but I haven't announced it yet. If you hit up the link in your registration email, it'll download the new version. (It adds a bunch of bug fixes and a new "sync record" button at the top that starts playing/recording when you press a note.)
Do you have any ideas about what BeatCleaver + JamDeck integration would look like? What would you like to be able to do with that?
Thanks!

Good question! Yes, unlike ReCycle, BeatCleaver can open up full MP3, M4A, and FLAC files and is more designed around sampling/chopping itself rather than for just messing with drum beats. ReCycle can't open MP3 files nor files over 5 minutes long either, both of which are no problem for BeatCleaver.Musical Gym wrote:No concrete ideas right now but it looks good.

Another big feature of BeatCleaver is time-stretching, which lets you change the BPM without changing the pitch, and it uses a really good engine for that. (Again, ReCycle doesn't have that, but it's really useful when you're sampling from a song.) Lastly, the "Drag Export" mode I created lets you just grab your slices and drag them right out of BeatCleaver and into your DAW, which caps off the very quick workflow (imo).
If you have a spare minute to download and try the BeatCleaver trial, it should give you a good idea of how fluid everything is and I'd be curious to hear what you think.
Thanks!

Ok, good call. We'll see how time goes but I think it definitely makes sense to add some effects in there too. If I run out of time, I can add them after 1.4 too. If you had to pick one effect, what would be the most important? EQ?XGmode wrote:- More FX editoptions, like: EQ / filter / dist ( clip, fold, sat ) / crossfade / mirror ( whats on leftchan. goes to rightchan. ).

I think converting from edit regions to slice points and back again would be incredibly useful, though I haven't figured out how it should work yet. This will definitely be in 1.4, and maybe I'll have something to show in the next devlog video.
BeatCleaver already has a really good time-stretching engine built-in, which lets you stretch an entire song or cherry pick just one slice and stretch it. That said, if you stretch one slice, it'll just save that to a separate file, so it's not really "elastic" per-se. By "elastic audio", do you mean something like the warp points in Ableton (or how Pro Tools works)?dredd i knight wrote:Hey been thinking about getting for a while... What I was imagining was that maybe I could make a "time stretch edit" that stretched the audio when you resized it. So say if you sliced a loop into 8, then converted the slices into edit regions, you could warp the groove and really mess things up. If that's not what you had in mind, maybe you can find a good YouTube video showing me how you'd like elastic audio to work?
Thanks for all feedback guys, keep it coming!

Do you have any ideas about what BeatCleaver + JamDeck integration would look like? What would you like to be able to do with that?
One idea would be to save beats as new drum loops for jamdeck. the other would perhaps be to create new instruments from sliced samples but this may all get too far afield from the original JamDeck concept.

Yes warp marker style like ableton is exactly what I meant by elastic audio. Your idea for time stretch edit sounds like an elegant solution, that would suit beat cleaver perfectly.

Yes, EQ would be my first pick.
Thanks for the app, love the speed of it, use it primarely to create slices for my hardware sampler (Yamaha A4000).
Cheers.

Hi,
Just gave a go to the demo and first impression is that it feels solid and it is fun to use, so congrats on that!
The thing I would have liked to do, is to be able to click on the waveform, highlight a portion of it, cut or crop a section...so here's an idea for you. Also it would be great if we could slice with cmd clic on the waveform (right click is less precise).
The interesting part, tho, is the integration of the new edit mode with the slices. I was wondering if each of the slices created could be made of those edit portion so that you could edit independently each slices. Given that you could apply volume changes, timestretching, fades, reverse, normalize, filter. Volume and fades handles would be a bonus. A lock feature would also come quite handy.
Of course warp markers would put BeatCleaver in another level as transient detection, the latter you must have thought over I presume....
Hope this is useful to you.
