Thanks man. I jumped on a very cheap used Yamaha that was on my short list of new basses to buy. I got used to it quickly and it's doing the job. Note: The ibby bass you mentioned is indeed a reasonable "in" for a beginner.
I'm just using an alto wedge as an amp for now, works fine. I've mostly been trying to play easy things, build up muscle memory, transfer what I know from guitar, learn typical bass cliches that make bass lines interesting, and improve my ability to play bass lines by ear.
