I've tried a demo of Punch now. The default kick sound I get is called '01 A Style 01' so I tried to emulate it in Tremor.

First thing, this kick appears to be based on the resonance self-oscillation technique...
It's an oscillator, with pitch modulation.
I recorded this quickly, the init sound with a few quick tweaks, mind you i'm doing this on the mac trackpad holding my daughter, been trying to upload this for the last 2 days sorry, needed to install a FTP client, you know THAT old chestnut...

Sorry for the smeggy MP3, I did have a WAV for you but i lost it somewhere.

Not that I think it isn't capable of other types of sounds, but it just seems to have one dominant flavor. Whereas other synths get another flavor faster. Horses for courses.
Yes I think this says it well... don't get me wrong, I actually DO like Tremor very much, but it's just too CPU hoggy and time consuming when I just need a fast punchy kick. I WILL however buy it one of these days and give it a proper spanking.

Thanks for all the demos himalaya, very much respect your work. Cheers.

himalaya wrote:the Tremor kick has a little high frequency 'tsyk' 'tsyk' sound which I like as it adds some nice definition. However, what I'm concerned with is - at least where it comes to Theo's appraisal of Tremor - is that there ought to be no bass in this Tremor kick. No punch, no definition and it should be all 'tinny'. So going on from here, is that what people hear?
No, but we do like to exaggerate a bit :P

Some here do exaggerate, don't they. :D

Anyway, sorry for the delay - very busy just now. However, here's my short emulation. 2 bars of your sound followed 2 bars of Tremor:

I only focused on the first few seconds of you clip though. Now that I listen to it again, the envelope 'hold' stage is a bit too long in the Tremor example.
time consuming when I just need a fast punchy kick
That's true. Tremor gives an open synthesiser page without any shortcuts, and Punch has a focused set of parameters. I've had a brief play with Punch (thanks to this thread) and it is very, very good - no doubt about that. However, nothing beats that mod system in Tremor which can make some very interesting animated sounds. I think Tremor begs for some cool percussive 'beds', sweetening loops that can be layered with a kick + snare. Tremor's mod system is perfect for that.

hanks for all the demos himalaya, very much respect your work. Cheers.
Glad you like them. :)

When i first installed Tremor I just ran through the sounds quickly and got a feel for the oscillators etc (or what i thought was 'a feel for') and it sounded very meh to me, but i like what you've done with it Himalaya. I've always though it to be good for minimal tech and stuff like that, i guess i just need to have some time to spend with it, unfortunately the time i get with this music hobby of mine is very few and far between, so i try to go for simple interfaces that quickly get the job done. There's something about FXpansion that has always turned me off, not cos i lack the ability or nous to tweak, but their stuff just seems to take a long time to say what I want to with it. Quality stuff, can't totally put my finger on why I've never clicked with any of their stuff - even the free compressor.
