Is there any better SW Synth Deal than the Korg Legacy right now?

I am stuck on Wavestation... Two days into ownership of the Legacy collection - and I've only quickly scratched the surface of the plethora of patches that Wavestation ships with. Interesting side note about ROM11 8 Sandman...
The sound of the Wavestation is familiar to users of the Apple Macintosh, since the startup chime that has featured on every Mac from the Quadra 700 to present day was created by Jim Reekes on a Korg Wavestation. Reekes said, "The startup sound was done in my home studio on a Korg Wavestation. It's a C Major chord, played with both hands stretched out as wide as possible (with 3rd at the top, if I recall)." The sound in question is a slightly modified "Sandman" factory preset.

Second to discovering u-he Zebra, the Legacy Collection (so far.. appears to be) the best money I have spent on GAS in the last several years.

For those new to the Wavestation, or just for those that didn't know, there are 132 free banks for download in a zip file from the unofficial Korg forum. All above board, though I understand they pulled the M1 collection for copyright reasons.
------------------------------------
132 banks for the Wavesation module of Korg Legacy Digital Edition, version 1.2 and later.
Each bank has been saved as a wsram file so you can import it via FILE/LOAD to the RAM of your choice.
------------------------------------
http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpbb2/ ... hp?t=15723
There seems to be readme files for most of the banks I have checked and all the sound designers give their blessing for sharing. There are some real gems in there. Programming a Wavestation is not for the faint hearted, and any man that take it on must know what he is getting himself into, or he will find out soon enouqh. A lot of time and effort and talent went into these. And for the most part it shows. Essential if you have just got your grubby mitts on a Wavestation.
And for those that have the MonoPoly, I can recommend if you didn't know it before:
http://xenossoundworks.com/monopoly.html
Superb sound design for a couple of bucks.
And don't neglect the MDE-X either. Do not let it's small stature fool you into underestimating its ability. The reverb is excellent and so is the compressor.
Having said that, the reverb on the Wavestation is out of this world. So good it can even make a trumpet sound like a trumpet.
And also for you noobs that just picked it up, did you know that Korg actually programmed in a resonance control for the filter that the original keyboard lacked? It was one of the few common complaints about this king of keyboards.
CC#71 FTW!
cheers.

One that every serious gamer should immediately recognize is Midnight Run.jdoo wrote:

(RAM1 - P20)
Was used slightly altered for the first few seconds of the startscreen/intro music.

I was just offering an answer to the question posed in the thread title.VitaminD wrote:But does it really matter how many items are in the kit if they are all subpar? I'm not saying they are, but what I am asking is shouldn't quality matter over quantity?
I'd rather have one synth that really grabs my attention and sits well in a mix vs 8 subpars that sound dated and may not really fit in my songs.
Whether or not you get use out of those products is a personal, subjective matter, and I was just talking numbers.
Anyway, there's not a single item I've run into in Komplete that I would consider "sub-par" even if I don't use everything the bundle offers. It's all pretty consistently well-done stuff, and every Komplete purchase I've made has been well worth it for my work. It's inspiring, educational, and fun.
And I've personally gotten a lot more use out of the NI stuff than anything in the Legacy Collection, but that's mainly because I'm a Roland fan and I've got hardware for when I need my vintage sounds. No slight against the KLC.

This wasn't 132 patches.. it is 132 'banks' of patches.codec_spurt wrote:For those new to the Wavestation, or just for those that didn't know, there are 132 free banks for download in a zip file from the unofficial Korg forum. Update... for Logic Pro users. If you have Logic Pro and the KLC, there is a mega-thread on the Logic Pro Help forum, where folks have shared Logic browser indexes of various sound sets -- KLC included. After purchasing the KLC, downloading these indexes was one of the first things I did, as it gives you visibility in Logic's browser to the hundreds of KLC performances.
Re-indexed the Wavestation cards, into categories that make it easier to find KLC Wavestation performances. Posted in the LP thread here: http://www.logicprohelp.com/forum/viewt ... 55#p504555
There are 979 performances indexed for the Wavestation's 18 cards. The other KLC synths have also been indexed into Logic aupreset format in the same thread...

M1 legacy used to be my go to for virtual instruments. But honestly the multi samples in Dimension Pro by Cakewalk blew me away with the quality and quantity of sounds.
While I still like Wavestation KLC I'm finding it inflexible with lack of multi-sample import

I just picked up my nanoKey2 for 40 from Guitar Center. I was looking at M1 for a while, and while I'm still unable to get the full M1, the M1 le is just fine, and I figure, I can just pick up the rest at a later date.
Also, the controller is a fantastic little piece of kit. It's not weighted, so it doesn't bother me at all, but I love having it sit next to my laptop and being able to play with one hand.
Great way to doodle.
even with the one card/no easy FX, the M1 LE is fantastic.

This is going to sound weird and backwards but...VitaminD wrote:But does it really matter how many items are in the kit if they are all subpar? I'm not saying they are, but what I am asking is shouldn't quality matter over quantity?
No!
Man, let me tell you, there are so many things you can do to sounds these days.
I proudly use my M1 over Dimension Pro and even GPO.
M1 has nice, clean, crisp, mono samples and an outstanding set of effects. This makes it more usable overall than GPO's dirty, muddy, low fi stereo samples that make me want to shoot myself. I can do more with these sounds, tweak them in ways I can't tweak GPO, and the layman listener can't tell the difference in the end. You guys can, but you're musicians, you're supposed to!
In all seriousness, listening to Naoshi Mizuta's wizardry with his SC-88 has taught me that quantity matters more than quality because there are so many ways and techniques of getting subpar sounds and samples to sound better that so long as you have some kind of starting point, you're good to go.
And that's sort of the thing here with the Korg stuff: it strikes a really nice balance between quality and quantity, I think. The M1, for example, gives you tons of stuff - all of it ranges from "below average" to "above average" quality - and that is more than enough to put it above something like HALion Sonic for me, because even if the guitars (for example) are bad, they still have that "guitar" timbre, and I can still use tricks to put them in a mix and make them sound good.
I don't mean to derail the thread, though, and I know you weren't disagreeing, I just kinda wanted to throw that out there.

For sure. If you're anyone but me (and maybe Asuyuka), the SampleTank deal is the way to go.BBFG# wrote:For the time being, I have to say at $40. that SampleTank is the thing to go for. I thought some of the samples were a little weak at first too, but I sat down and experimented last night with a six track pattern and it came out rather nice. With the esoundz deal I got around 8GB of sounds for the $40.
Just by the total numbers in sound and bang for the buck that beats the Korg.
The Korg will always be 50 dollars, but the SampleTank deal is ending in a few days.

Hmm, Sampletank will always have a place for me, and I will always be in love with the choirs, strings, some Omnisynth and the ethnic libraries. Omisynth may not be realistic, but I certainly have gotten a few sounds out of it. It was also worth the 20ish or so bucks back during the XT deal.HaganeSteel wrote:For sure. Especially since M1's choirs, at least, LE, can be a little weak sometimes. Then I layer the Sampletank choirs with M1 and do fun things to them and they sound lovely together!
Still, most of ST's libraries aren't worth it compared to the M1, at least, to me. But some of them I still quite find usable.

Its a good deal in this relative world of synth and sample.jdoo wrote:Is there any better SW Synth Deal than the Korg Legacy right now?
I don't think so.

I would like to see other hardware companies release software versions of their classic like Korg did.
Then they could have the best deal ever...
