Hello,

I have a wav file with loduest peaks @ -0.3 dBFS.

When I try to convert it to mp3 (with EZ CD Audio converter), I got clippings up to +0.7 dBFS.

Rednering in reaper with a limiter doesn't help eiterh. How can I render a wav to mp3 without any clippings?

I guess the problem is intersample peaks but how can I avoid them?

Thanks!

Is this what dither is meant to fix?

Don't think so, when rendering wav to mp3 in reaper, dither isn't even available.

Original wav never goes over -0.3 dBFS but mp3 320 kbps reaches +0.7 dBFS...

Master to WAV with peaks below -1.0 dBfs, then the MP3 will not go beyond 0.0 dBfs
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

Yep, I guess that's the solution but I wanted to know if there are other ways.

No you aren't but if you want to know a bit more on dither:

I had the same thing in REAPER when I imported "professional" tracks as MP3 for comparison. I'm trying to remember if I even had issues importing stuff directly from CD too.

Basically, all of them went into +dB values. You simply get rounding erros. At least, this is what I was told when I asked about it.

Another factor is resampling: project at 48kHz with 44.1kHz files.

I mix in REAPER and export 16bit 44.1kHz wav, then drag & drop onto XLD to convert to mp3.

i'm not sure what is exactly behind this but it happens because of mp3 compression.
read this, maybe it helps: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3

Sounds weird to me. I never had a problem with that. Maybe try to compress the file with another program, like foobar2000, Winamp or any other player. Just make sure there's no additional effect, equalizer or whatever running. I suspect the program you did it with adds some stuff.

Edit: Could try Audacity too.

Most encoders work by splitting the full-range frequency content into around 32 narrower bands
keywords: digital, 32 band, compressed. it seems, clipping can happen if a frequency range/band is in a 'critical' range. i can't describe it better but the clipping is definetly mp3 compression issue.

Sounds like this is the only solution then:
