I was looking at the information at the page, and it had slipped my mind, but that is exactly the term I was thinking this plugin would fall in underarachnaut wrote:Basically, as I understand it, this is a musique concrete device at it's soul

From what I've found & read on that Mammut thing, it's an FFT processing software and Cosmos is granular, I really don't see the similarities or how they can be compared.Eauson wrote:What's the difference between this and say mammut?

So... with 2.2 out, does anybody want to share experiences? Overall it's much more stable now than 2.1 was, but you still have to watch your step a bit.
My biggest problem 'musically' is avoiding a stream interruption when the parameters get recalculated. I get a nicely evolving thing of sample fragments going, but after one revolution it cuts out and starts over again. Using the parallel universe offset doesn't seem to help, nor does adjusting the parallel universe cycle rate. My understanding is that I'm not getting truly overlapping meso-events, they only overlap inside the cycle. When the distributions recalculate, everything gets reset and the audio stream starts over. Is this by design (currently) or am I doing something wrong? This has got to be the most complex thing I've ever fooled around with.
I still feel the biggest trap to avoid comes from the cyclical mapping of actually random distributions. The cyclical mapping tends to dominate the randomness to the point that it appears far less random than it is. It often kind of 'breathes' events, which may or may not be a desired effect. Using preset morphing a lot of this can be masked, but it also ads another layer of complexity.

If you listen carefully, you can hear the sounds in the video demos that are still clicking and have noisy dropsValery_Kondakoff wrote:The plugin Cosmosf version is released: http://www.sonic-lab.com/products-2

Is it just a problem with maybe the samples used or it's the plugin?

I'm totally new to Cosmosf and I'm evaluating it right now. Here is what I have found in the manual:
Clicks -not because of the lacking CPU power-, can happen when the audio output of each cycle is not
zero padded or abruptly changing amplitude between the end and beginning of the new cycle. If you
change the window type from "rectangle" to anything else, the window will zero the amplitude at the
start & end of each meso or micro event.
Also such discontinuity might occur when switching the output buffers of Cosmosƒ. For instance, pitch
transposition can always introduce DC offsets in the audio signal. However after few experimentation,
you will find the best timing for changing switching the buffers safely and avoid such possible realtime
operation artifacts. Enough practice is always necessary to understand the behavior of such a complex
system.

Yeah, clicks do occur here and there no matter if you use rectangle or any of the other waveforms. But it's easy to remove clicks afterwards with something like RX2, now that it's possible to process the output of Cosmoƒ with other plugs in real time, clicks can of course get enhanced, e.g. when sending the signal to huge reverb spaces.

Cosmos f into B2 is just incredible. I'm not getting much in the way of clicks either. A bit of crackle on some settings is part of the granular charm.
Great other improvements here, preset banks, sample selection, etc. Fantastic.

My first video experiment with the Plug-In version of Cosmosƒ in Logic - mangling 2 vocal samples, some VRoom on a send bus, a limiter on the Cosmosƒ track and RX2 declicker to surpress the occasional clicks:

fascinating stuff Simon. i'm trying to determine if i wanna spent the 200us on this. i have so much with reaktor, etc. does some cool stuff though!

Yeah nteresting for sure, but I still find it a bit surreal to spend +$200 on something that keeps rendering clicks and needed a declicker plugin to make it sounds smooth.

Well, that's not entirely true. It clicks on some settings, but I have found that if you set an enormous buffer size on your interface you don't really get any clicks on reasonable settings. I have 4000 samples or something when I'm working with Cosmos f and clicks were significantly reduced. It allows for some extreme settings, I mean, you can e.g. modulate panning so fast you get a tone out of just signal pan modulation.Neon Breath wrote:Yeah nteresting for sure, but I still find it a bit surreal to spend +$200 on something that keeps rendering clicks and needed a declicker plugin to make it sounds smooth.
That's one critique I'd have at this point: The 'musical' settings are often in a very narrow slider band, and mostly towards the zero end, and thus hard to set, even with the 'f' modifier. Many other granular synths have "/2, /4, /8, /16" settings for their modulators and I wish Cosmos f had this. Sometimes I want to set or move the loop accelleration between 0.01 and 0.04 and even pressing 'f' causes the value to jump above 0.20 just from a small mouse movement, which makes the generator jump to a place I didn't want it.
I can't recommend the standalone version if you're on windows, because it doesn't support ASIO, and MME/DirectX doesn't perform well enough for this plugin, so you get many clicks, overloads and frequent crashes. But the VST is solid and I guess standalone is fine on Mac, where it uses high-performance drivers.
Is there an upgrade path from the 'lite' version? I think you might be doing yourself a favor starting with the lite version, if you can run multiple instances (I think you can), the only major features you're missing out on are preset morphing and feedback/feed-forward, and $115 is perfectly reasonable IMO.

Thank's - the workflow in Cosmosƒ is somewhat unique and if you spend some serious time with it leads you to unknown sonic territories, I know all the territories Reaktor leads me to so that's not an alternative.CrystalWizard wrote:fascinating stuff Simon. i'm trying to determine if i wanna spent the 200us on this. i have so much with reaktor, etc. does some cool stuff though!
