It feels like X-mas here today with Dune BE and Charlatan 1.4... :hihi:

Thank you, Karrikuh!

I was just about to test what this new version of Charlatan is capable of. :D

meh, nothing earth shattering, i went back to v1.3 with my awesome skin
HW SYNTHS [KORG T2EX - AKAI AX80 - YAMAHA SY77 - ENSONIQ VFX]
HW MODULES [OBi M1000 - ROLAND MKS-50 - ROLAND JV880 - KURZ 1000PX]
SW [CHARLATAN - OBXD - OXE - ELEKTRO - MICROTERA - M1 - SURGE - RMiV]
DAW [ENERGY XT2/1U RACK WINXP / MAUDIO 1010LT PCI]

Post

Well, sepearate noise osc and new wave type for oscillator 2 is earth shattering enough for me. :P

Post

I tend to agree with the colleague chk071, as a new wave type and separate noise oscillator is a pretty good upgrade. :D

I was just playing with it, and I kinda miss the second LFO... then I started thinking about it and reached the conclusion: it could really use a 2nd LFO. :D

However, while I was thinking about how it could use 2nd LFO, I thought "well, maybe a MOD ENVelope could be used as a kind of LFO, if karrikuh added some new envelope modes like "repeat" and "retrigger" to it, so it could act as a very flexible LFO, and it is different than the normal LFO, which makes the whole synth even more powerful". :)

While at it, it occurred to me that adding gate envelope mode to AMP envelope, like Roland SH-101 has, could effectively make the AMP envelope an additional MOD envelope, and there "effectively" you have a synth with a simple gated AMP envelope [maybe make it AD envelope, like ARP synths have?] and two modulation envelopes that you can use for modulating stuff. You could use one envelope to modulate pitch then. Simple solution that doesn't clutter the nice and very usable GUI too much, I think, but adds lots of new functionality.

Also, RING could use an amount knob, and OSC1 could use a Sine waveform, which leads me to...

It's a lovely sounding synth! Raw VA synth power. :D Speaking of raw synth power, imagine a knob somewhere on the left hand side that says "FM"? And it would simply use one OSC to modulate the other OSC in a certain amount, like "ring" should. You can also call it "PD" or "AM". When there's "RM", there should be some kind of "FM", too. :hihi: Doing FM with different types of waveforms can sound so crazy and new. One of my all time favourite hardware synths Matrix-6 had FM, too. That "little" parameter put at 10-20% could add so much to a synth bass, for example, because FM adds upper harmonics, thus giving the bass a fuller sound. It just makes a typical subtractive synth sound more unique, and useful.

I've been playing a lot with Synapse Dune BE lately [free if you "like" Beat magazine on Facebook], and it made me realise how a simple looking synth with cleverly devised sound parameters can give you very broad sound palette, and on the other hand there are synths with 100s of knobs that look complex but give you a kind of restricted sound palette. So it's not important to just throw in a bunch of additional knobs or faders, it's what they do that matters. Knowledge, and some clever thinking matters, that you best get by playing with the right synths. Dune is very, very cleverly constructed synth. Lots of fun. :D Currently I cannot think of a better example, except maybe for the aforementioned SH-101. That's a really fun synth, too.

Just throwing some ideas, so you have something to ponder about, Karrikuh. :D

Cheers!

I'm using Magix Music Maker (x86) and it won't recognize current version of Charlatan as a VST.
I also have an ancient Charlatan v1.1.4, which it does recognize.

What in gods name did you do?

A quick word just to let you know that I'm making good progress on bank for Charlatan, Time Capsule.

I read there is a known bug regarding the square waveform (some rain-like noise that should not be there), and despite knowing about it Synapse Audio won't remove that bug before version 2. I thought of getting Dune some time ago, but that behavior on the part of that company made me decide otherwise. I didn't want to pay so much money for a product that is known to be buggy. I hope owners of version 1 will at least get version 2 for free to compensate for that...
