OP's running a Asus P6t board so an upgrade from 1st gen to 4th gen will be noticable as far as overall performance goes. Check the chart here and the i7 920 at the bottom of the chart will be roughly be in the ball part of your current system...

http://www.scanproaudio.info/?p=2290

...but it depends what you want from the upgrade. A more modern machine will offer up more performance in the sense that you'll get a higher track count and be able to use more plug ins concurrently.

If however you just want it to run and feel faster, then do yourself a fresh re-install of windows on a decent SSD and that should give you what you want without upgrading the whole lot.

Regarding memory I'm going to fly in the face of some of the advice offered here (sorry gents).

When buying memory don't go for anything higher than the speed the chipset supports, rather than what the motherboard maker claims. Z77 as an example has "offical" 1600Mhz support but MB makers claim support for faster speeds. Whilst most will work you tend to find the higher you go off spec the less stable it tends to be as your technically overclocking the chipset to some extent to extend the support to the faster modules.

In contrast to that X79 has 1866Mhz support althrough even that is patchy, I guess what I'm trying to say is avoid overclockers memory. In an audio rig you'll gain pretty much nothing from 2200Mhz memory apart from a hole in your bank account and a headache.

especially when the OP randomly announced he wants '64 gb of ram or 128 ' of it...

I have 8gig of RAM on both my systems.
The only time I suck it is when 3d modelling,
so 16 is a safe bet that it won't be a problem IMO
I wonder what I want in here
-my site is gone and music a mess

Only 1 Tb of DDR4 RAM and a liquid nitrogen cooler will give you pro results!

:hihi:

That's basically what I said before...

FFS I have XP and 4GB and everything works.
The OP needs to break open his manuals.

Ya man thanks no joke I got lots to go. I'm working on it hard. Waves mercury is on my mind but dam is that a bitch to try and get your hands on. I want so much I'm just taking it one step at a time. Just bought some more expansions for superior drummer and EZ drummer. Rock on.

I can't quite make a distinction between who's serious, who's joking, who's being sarcastic, and who just isn't knowledgeable/proficient enough about computers and software here. :hihi:

Well, Mushy is serious, I get that.

128GB or 64GB of RAM?? You plan on emulating nuclear explosions or Earth's climate behavioural patterns? :hihi: I think 8-16GB should be an overkill for anybody. Even those who use huge orchestral sample banks. Besides, smaller RAM works faster, and what you really want is lower latency RAM sticks, not the biggest or fastest [in MHz] ones, even though many of the fastest [in MHz] ones can usually work at 1600Mhz at very low latencies, too. My RAM sticks work at 7-7-7-24, and at 1600MHz. They're G.Skill Pi series F3 CL6 2GB sticks. I could even make them work faster at 6-8-6-24, but I've loosened up the settings a bit for just in case. You can never have enough stability.

I'm the most serious person you'll ever meet. I'm a own everything one day. Now what do you think about this set of ram? I may buy this but lets do some practice for my well being. What does this ram do? $900 Is all I see. 64 gb is all I see. 6 sticks is all I see or more. How does latency work with all those digits? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233363

I assume its super fast. It's better to have it then not need the extra.

How is it hard to 'get your hands on' exactly? Its for sale everywhere that does Waves plugins...
