Absolutely... sorry I forgot to elaborate on that. What I mean is that you take your kick layer(s) and copy and paste them again. Take each one now and increase attack, and tweak it in such a way the it sounds reversed. Then apply some wetness action.Mushy Mushy wrote:Yeah but we can't render and reverse can we? That would be the easiest option by a long shot.bjporter wrote:That would seem one of the best ways to me. Also you could take your kick layer(s) and reverse each of them to make a reverse kick, and do as you said above with 100% wetness to give it a bit more of the timbre.Mushy Mushy wrote:Seeing as you guys are brilliant with the seemingly impossible.
Is there any way to simulate a reverse reverb effect on a kick?
I'm thinking of just automating a saw/sine to simulate the reverb envelope and apply a 100% wet verb to this.
Any other methods you could suggest?

Then you can as you said layer another sound underneath farther ahead in the track with lots of reverb, so that simulates the reverb tail of the reverse kick.... then they 'Melt' together, and sound like one reverse!

Hey just a quick update. I was working on a song and started maxing out my CPU. Some of the instances of Feldspar were taking up close to 15% each.
I downloaded a plugin called DiscoDSP Highlife, which is free for Windows. http://www.discodsp.com/highlife/
It hosts another vsti and then renders it to samples, and then unloads the vsti. Great, I thought... Except I couldn't figure out how to load up preset banks as it doesn't seem that Highlife -or- Feldspar had an option for that. So I did some digging and found another plugin called Wusik VM -> http://www.kvraudio.com/product/wusik-vm-by-wusik . I was able to load Wusik into highlife, and then Feldspar into Wusik. Then I loaded the preset I had saved out of Feldspar, rendered with Highlife, and now the CPU usage is something like 1.5% instead of 15%. Nice!
It's a bit long of a workaround (especially figuring it out initially), but it's worth it to continue on my song. In fact, I may just start making templates with Highlife/WusikVM loaded in a bunch of instrument slots so I can be ready for this from the get-go.

I might try - but I'd like to hear V'gers opinion on it's use.

Well when I did my track using the old fix (renaming the dll file) Feldspar was very light on CPU. Even in my cumbersome FL loading close to 30 instances was not a problem (CPU was around 50% only). The only synth that performed equally good was Podolski. I'm usually running out of CPU before going pass 10 instances (in some cases even less than that)

So use with caution and always think if the synth could produce the EXACT same result as you get with not using the synth. Although I trust in the honor system I would of course much rather you just bounced parts played with the synth.. What do others think? One for the rules vote?

It seems easier and more straightforward to me to simply say that such tools are not allowed. After all, bouncing is always an option.V'ger wrote: What do others think? One for the rules vote?

Hello,
for my track I used cutting. I didn't sample Podolski, but volume automation was allowed right ? So I just had to start playing a note while having the volume to 0, and then raise it to 0dB or whatever to hear only the part I wanted in the sound. Then to place it right in the track I just had to figure out the pre-delay, when to start the note, to have cut hitting in the right time.
Of course every "hit" was sounding slightly different because I didn't sampled.
I've read somewhere that someone else did use a tempo-synced gate...
To come back to the sampling, I was hitting hard cpu too so I thought that I will freeze tracks while composing, then when the song is done/mixed, unfreeze, add variations, render... But if someone doesn't like to freeze too early (I don't like it but I manage for now), the sampling every notes of the synth could be a nice way to reduce cpu hit, while keeping the thing a little bit more flexible for writing melodies and mixing. But not so nice for synth parameter automation. One could then replace all the sampled synth by the original patch once the track is almost done, to avoid to use sampling at all...
Just a thought.

At it's core it is of course just sampling for convenience and CPU saving which is Ok, but making and using complete samplesets of the synth as one can do here is in my opinion bound to create some instances where things will sound different than the synth. Cutting of sounds for example and I suspect other things as well.
So use with caution and always think if the synth could produce the EXACT same result as you get with not using the synth. Although I trust in the honor system I would of course much rather you just bounced parts played with the synth.. What do others think? One for the rules vote?
I'm thinking if you guys are going to use sampling up the wazzuuu, honor system works well, especially if you're cool with sharing your project - that will give confidence in others that you're all legit.
I shared my for the first time with Podolski (see OSC 52 thread) and it feels good man... nothing to lose... I just want to spread the love. So don't feel weird to share.

Good idea to just use the sampling as a tool for sketching only, not rendering.Davias wrote:Hello,

You're right you can do automation that will sound close to the side effects of sampling, but it will be hard to do exactly, especially when playing a series of notes fast. The main point is that I guess we've all tried playing a sampler that's loaded with a synth set and how it sounds slightly odd and not really how the synth would. Bottom line is that it is just wrong to use a sampler and no synth in a synth contest. On the other hand we obviously don't want people with maxed systems to limit their writing because of it, so I guess it's a balancing act.

The good news is that Incredibly powerful CPUs are present now a days for cheap...

Octa-core for $200 hoho.. But then you might also need a new motherboard, power supply unit, cooling systems, maybe some new memory and a new chassis etc and whoopsy.. $$$$

Right absolutely... so earlier this year helped a friend build a comp, was like $650 - 8 cores, 32gb ram, motherboard (in built vid card), harddrive, monitor, chassi + powersupply, mouse, keyboard. Windows 7 came free because of MSDN.V'ger wrote:Octa-core for $200 hoho.. That's not too bad at all.

No, can really get a super DAW machine for not much these days.
By the way I sometimes see hardcore gamers who always needs the latest greatest selling their top tweaked complete rigs for incredibly cheap. You might have to put up with some purple lights etc, but good bang for the buck and there's usually top cooling systems etc included.
