Hello KVR! I've teamed up with Synthmob.com to run a competition to win all my synth soundsets, my breaks sample library and a Korg Volca Beats.

All you have to do is download the contest pack and use the free synth sounds and samples to write an original track.

The download pack contains 416 synth sounds for Massive, Absynth, FM8, Omnisphere, TAL Elek7ro and Tyrell N6. It also contains 213 samples, including drum hits, drumloops, synth loops, sound effects and vocoded vocals. So, even if you don't want to enter the competition (you fool!) there's more than enough sounds to have some fun with.

The rules and entry requirements are quite simple. Write a track (any genre) using any sounds from the download pack you like - you can also use any vocals, live instruments or sample libraries of live instruments you wish (just not any other synth sounds or drums). But you can twist and manipulate the samples as you like.

Once you've written your exquisite masterpiece of a track, upload it to Soundcloud with the tag 'SMTUComp' and copy and paste the code from the competition page at Synthmob.com into the track description - so we can find it and take a listen.

A shortlist will be devised from all the entries and will be judged by me (The Unfinished) and my expert panel: world-renowned cellist and composer, Tina Guo; composer/producer Red Ochsenbein; and trance/house producer Shahin Kanafchian.

All entries need to be in by the end of June 30th. So you've got a whole month.

I really look forward to hearing your entries! All the best!

This is way cool :) The samples/presets are awesome - especially the drum loops: killer :) Thanks a lot :)

Now for the record: since the presets are for specific synths, I presume only those instruments are to be used. BUT do we have to use only your presets, or we can also use the stock banks of those synths? Just to be sure :)

Post

check out the thread for this on the synthmob page and theres a lot more details on the rules...he said technically you could tweak any of the presets until there unrecognizable but he will favor the tracks where he can here his sounds clearly

Post

I already did that, but there's still no clear answer about it: the limit is set only to drums & synth SAMPLES. I'm asking about presets - are we allowed to use in addition the default presets that come in the stock banks of those VST instruments, or not? :)

There's quite a lot of usable stuff in the pack, I just wanted to make sure before starting (or trying) to work on a song :)

Hey idfpower.

You can ONLY use synth sounds/presets from the download pack. Hence why I included a couple of free synths, so no-one would be excluded.

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for the answer :) Just what I thought - but I wanted to be sure :)

Now I have another issue: for some (strange) reason I can't load the presets for TAL & Tyrell. TAL loads them but there's no audible difference, while Tyrell doesn't see any preset from the folder. The only ones that went through without a hitch were the ones for FM8. Anyone experiencing the same problem? Is it maybe a compatibility issue? BTW I'm using FL9 as DAW.

Nice I will try to participate if I find time for it ^^

Post

I hope so.

Thanks for all the nice comments about the synth sounds and samples.

Ok so we are only allowed to use the presets/sounds from the small pack we download, and we can tweak them however we like..

1.For drum samples and synths, you may only use the sounds included in the download. You may, however, add vocals or sound effects as well as real instrument recordings or libraries. You may process and manipulate the sounds any way you want.

So for drums you MAY use the sounds included, not you MUST, coz under it sais adding as well a real instrument recording is possible.
So that mean i can sit over my drums and record then how ever i like, i can add guitars, bass, what ever i want, hence the you many manipulate the sounds any way you want.

2.Your track must use samples and sounds from the download pack.

Now that doesn't say you must use sounds from the pack ONLY, and with the section above saying you can use any instrument and record it, that means i just plug in one of my real synths/keyboards and record them.

If that post is an attempt to make me not want to run a competition ever again, congratulations.

This is supposed to be a fun music competition to win some cool prizes. Not a courtroom set up to see if you can push the envelope and test the rules to their extremity.

I really don't understand where you're coming from.

I think you rather taking this the wrong way, trust me i want to have fun and compose 8).

It's just man the way your wrote the rules they are very confusing, as i read from the comments on your site and here, i just need understand so i can roll my sleeves up and start digging. :D
Would hate to start composing and then realise am creating the track going against the rules, scratch, delete, start all over again :hihi: if you get me?

Post

Sorry dude, I've misunderstood you. Appreciate you not biting back! :) I've had a few very silly emails over this competition!

Okay...

Let me see if I can clarify in some clearer detail.

1. You have to include some synth sounds or samples from the download pack.
2. You cannot use synth sounds or drums samples other than in the download pack - I won't mind the odd crash cymbal or cowbell.
3. You can add live vocals or instruments - by live instruments I am talking about pianos, guitars, woodwinds, brass, strings. Non-electronic instruments.
4. You can also use sample libraries of vocals and instruments mentioned in point three.

When trying to write the rules, we had various versions of the copy, trying to get everything across but without it being so long-winded that everyone died f boredom before clicking on 'download'. I appreciate we've had some issues with the rules.

Hope that clears up any grey areas.
