One-Synth-Challenge 53: Feldspar - Submissions and gossip

Before that I was doing most of my composition on a 600mhz Windows CE device. (I have a desktop PC but the amount of time I can spend on it anymore is very limited)

How you could make music using something like this??? Which software you used to use?

I'm really curious about it and would love to hear some examples of your work

The software I used is called Sunvox --> http://www.warmplace.ru/soft/sunvox/

It is a cross-platform tool which runs on just about anything under the sun. Windows, Linux, Mac, Windows CE, Android, iOS, Palm, and several other platforms. The device I used is an NEC Mobilepro 900 which I actually overclocked to 597mhz (stock 400)

All the songs in this set --> https://soundcloud.com/organic-io/sets/sunvox I did those in Sunvox. "Spring Tide" is probably the best of them.
Using this device enabled me to work on the songs during lunchbreaks at work, on the couch at night, etc, places and times that I was previously unable to work on music. After composing, I rendered each synth or sampler out to a separate track and then did the mixing and extra FX in Reaper on the desktop PC.
Also there are a few songs with vocals and "Walled Garden" has an acoustic drum part, I had to add those in Reaper because there is no way the Mobilepro could handle large samples like that (with only 64MB RAM)

Using this actually worked out pretty well for me for a while, but I started to get frustrated with the limitations. But I figure, it's roughly as powerful as a desktop PC from 15 or so years ago, and we were able to write music with computers back then. So why not now???

P.S.... Here's a picture of it that I took last night after I did a little modification to it


(Tracker programs usually have 2.5 octaves mapped to keyboard keys. I needed to replace the J key anyway, so I thought "why not?" and ordered some black keys. This will help me visualize the position of the music keyboard better.

Agreed! Actually I already have a 2 octave MIDI keyboard, but it is still too big to fit in my laptop bag, so I get weird looks when I walk into my office with a keyboard sticking up out of my bag

Yeah, I got one of these to use on the couch or elsewhere (have a few other keyboards, main one is a 49 key... ugh, wish it was 88 ). The LKP25 actually works great, though... just no aftertouch - I used it almost exclusively to compose (if that's what you call the thing that I do) a few OSC tracks

I got a second hand 76 key casio keyboard, and a hand me down 49 key, both have MIDI, so they work pretty well.

Just scan the second hand thrift shops like Salvation Army, or Good Will. They're like $5

Yeah you definitely compose. I just checked out some of your stuff on Soundcloud, I really liked it. I've got a M-audio o2 currently. I like it because of the knobs, but the keys are only "half action", so they aren't totally satisfying to play. I was at Guitar Center a few weeks ago and tried out a 2 octave keyboard that was amazing, had the best feel of any keyboard I've ever used possibly. But I can't remember what it was called. Possibly the Novation Impulse 25, or M-audio axiom 25. Either way it was definitely too big for a laptop bag but a niceeee keyboard.

Just as a random aside, whatttt was somebody thinking when they made this???


Eventually I'd like to build one of those janko/array keyboards similar to this:


But that's probably well into the future, don't really have time for that kind of a project any time soon, and definitely not shelling out the $2000+ for the commercial ones

Goodwill FTW! I'm somewhat of a goodwill junkie. Yep, I've seen plenty of Casios there. In fact in my town there is a "goodwill outlet" where they sell things by the pound. A couple years ago when I was trying to make money buying things and then selling them on ebay, I found a couple Casios for just a couple of $ at goodwill and was able to resell them on ebay for $40-$50. Not bad

Something about renaming the original *.dll and making copies of it.


I Just renamed feldspar 1 - 16. Even In MuLab the crashing problem still exists. I feel that renaming the instances is better anyway because its better on the cpu so there is no need for crash protection. Helped a lot with Oxium and Ableton.

The problem should now be fixed by recompiling. Try re-downloading the synth.

What I really miss out on is the extra keys... it feels awesome with both hands on different octaves and playing freely.

Yeah miss pitch bend, but I usually just automate that anyway. Agree, I much prefer to play with two hands on a larger set of keys... just a suggestion for anyone who may be still stuck using the computer keyboard... it's a huge step up for most sequencers.

Am I allowed to use Max 4 Live? It is part of my sequencer so there's an argument I can.
I only want to use it to assign an LFO to a certain parameter (ie, nothing too extravagant at all).
