can ipad be used as a midi controller for software on a PC? Or, are we stuck controlling the ipad? I know I can use it with stuff live V-Control, etc., but I want to use it to drive sounds in Kontakt, or whatever.

Yeah there are quite a few MIDI controllers that will work over wifi etc controlling software on your Mac/PC. Price range all over the place, but most seem really capable whether its 5 bucks or 50.

A few controllers to check out...

Liine (lemur) is supposed to have released livecontrol2. A free (for lemur owners) app dedicated to ableton live 8 & 9.
Can't find it on australian itunes app shop unfortunately. It may be available in the usa.
I'm tired of being insane. I'm going outsane for some fresh air.

The new live control is a template for Lemur, not a separate app. So I'm guessing there's a download link on their site or Lemurs site. I don't have Lemur myself, but their first version is available for free in TouchOSC, in case anyone's wondering...

thanks for that. the last lemur update was in march and livecontrol 2 was mentioned on the synthtopia site either yesterday or the day before.

Can I play midi keyboard, or drums, etc., with any of those apps?

I'm trying to integrate it as a musical controller, like I might a midi keyboard.

Yea, you can have ie an onscreen keyboard, drumpads etc sending out midi cc's on any chosen midi channel.

No, not really, as in the sense of being velocity and pressure sensitive, which is what is really required to emulate piano/keys (as in a keyboard), or a drum (as in a drum pad).

When Apple decide to put a proper 10-finger multi-touch pressure/force sensing device on their iPads then we would really have a winner as we'd have proper XYZ control, Z being pressure/velocity. Until then you're stuck with XY which seriously limits your capacity in this area. Sure, you can use the vertical position of a key to mimic velocity and in some apps can even move your finger up or down on the virtual "key" to emulate aftertouch but in all honesty it just doesn't cut it. I've tried it - surely there has to be something better than that. And there is, but nobody has bothered to engineer it...it's certainly VERY doable.

No, its not in-app, because it runs on your PC/Mac. You need to be logged in on the Liine site, and download it via 'Premium Content' at http://liine.net/en/products/lemur/prem ... control-2/
