I suppose that this project (it was named Cell) eventually turned into Spire. But I'm not 100% sure. The former Cell dev is active sometimes at a Russian forum, i may ask him if i once happen to catch him online.

Why? Interesting, i thought that Spire IS the former Cell, but coded in C++. Someone told this long time ago here on the forum, but my memory may let me down.

Ok I finally went mad and I bought it ! Finally VAT added only 11euros to the finally price, a bit expensive for me but I'll manage by smoking less this month, good for my health ! Sorry for have been a little bit overheated before, I guess passion makes me loose my mind :)

So there it is, Spire will become my main workhorse, just hope the CPU will improve in the future ^^

I thought that the Cell team gone split up. One dude chats over RMM that he has a working Cell prototype that no one will ever see, another one has made Spire. Kak to tak :-) may be you are better informed

Why does the filter digitally clip with this preset?

http://we.tl/ASFVUAQ2Ft

I'm finding that if you drive the filter input, it has a really harsh digital clip like this preset. If you turn off the filter, everything is smooth again. This only happens with the "perfecto" algorithm.

P.S.: I too would have purchased this synth already if it wasn't for the high CPU, I don't really care about the arp right now. I hope you'll consider making lower CPU your top priority for the moment or keep the sale going until a version with reduced CPU load is released so we can evaluate it properly before buying :)

Post

For what I can say for now the sound is impressive, I don't regret the bought. And my presets are much simpler than the factory ones (but I love them) so CPU hit is not as bad as I first thought, but still really heavy, I second that top priority would be to make the CPU less intensive.

Except that, I find the envelopes very sensitives and leading quickly to clicks, pops and other rumble, with the filter envelope too, took me a while to figure what was happening, I was first thinking the synth was broken somewhay, hearing a sublime texture while I was hearing ugly artifacts hiding behind.

Another thing I wonder about is the sync option, it sounds really quickly harsh to my ears with a lot of random noise on the top, of course hiding it with the filter makes all the nice high harmonics gone too... But maybe I'm doing something wrong ?

The multiband compressor is clicky too while moving the knob...

When I tried to modulate osc pitch with the envelopes I got ugly artifacts too :O

I have hard to use the drop down menu, there are little arrows but clicking them does nothing, the mouse wheel is not responding too. So it is not smooth to cycle between all different options.

Finally I'm wondering if custome waveforms could be imported in the future.

I don't regret my buy, this synth sounds amazing !

A sync option? Has this synth oscillator sync?? I have not found such option. But could be a limitation of the demo, maybe it's only in the full version?

Post

I tested the demo again. CPU use is high indeed and pads with more than 5 notes could max out a core of my CPU (Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 4 x 2.4 GHz).

Anyway i checked the presets and also tried to create some of my own sounds. Somehow this synth does not really "click" with me (except if the CPU maxes out... :) ), even after testing it a second time.
This could also based on the fact that i already got several comparable synths with great sound and/or tons of features like e.g. ElectraX, Synthmaster, Largo, Diversion, Rayblaster, Massive, Dune etc.

Hi Theo,

usually it is not my style to do a bank (maybe even a free one) for a synth i'm not really convinced of.
I also found that while Spire looks powerful at the first look it seemed hard for me to get results that really knocked me of my feet or at least results that are better than with those other synths i have mentioned. Somehow also the overall sound is not to may taste.
Based on the collection of high quality synths i already got (with several NFR license due to Beta testing etc.) i am becoming more and more picky about which new synths to use and/or purchase and i even sold some which i have not used for a while (and will sell some more soon maybe).

Currently i am also checking out if i need some additional FX plugins and just got the PSP NobleQ EQ (recently i also got ValhallaVintageVerb).

Anyway i also got enough other projects to work on (like another Beta test), also some i have postponed for a while which includes a bank for Synthmaster i had started back in 2011 (!!) or my bank for the Moog Slim Phatty that i have started in 2011 too (already got 100 patches but not really satisfied yet).
I also have to dig deeper into both Diversion and ElectraX soon. :)

I'm not sure with this synth. It sounds different, remembers me in some parts more to my Virus. Sonic Academy Ana plays a bit in this department, but sounds different (more bright and IMO digital like a plug-in synth).
I cannot remember about a lot of synth with this morphing oscillators (Afaik Gladiator 2, Albino) and a Virus TI emulated filter.
Btw. I found this AMSync option but this is not oscillator sync or only a different name?

Post

Spire just doesnt offer much. Its not a specialist synth/emulation, so doesnt fit that niche, and its got too much competition from already established synths that have been around a long time (Dune, Albino, Sylenth etc etc) and they perform better.

I cant see many ppl making banks for Spire this year...at least nothing inspiring. (im sure you will get the standard duplicate trance/dance banks that have already been done in a 20 other synths)

I think they need a rethink for the next product.

(besides Albino) Dune and Sylenth don't offer wave-shaping, so it's not right to compare them feature-wise. Wave-shaping can give tons of timbres Sylenth can only dream of.

I still haven't decided yet with this synth. I'm too picky for any sound issue within a synth (even at micro level), so any even almost inaudible clicks and glitches can put me off...(here i'm referring to other people notes in this thread, as i have to check the synth more accurately soon)

Also, unison would be better, like say Retrologue or Largo have.

Btw... Why so crazy names with underscores like "Cutoff_2" - bad to read! Why not "Cutoff 2"? Or short names where it makes no sense like "DRFT" instead of "DRIFT" or "CPY" instead of "COPY" :D IMO a GUI design mistake. But this should not the big deal to change this in further versions.

Of course Dune could offer a kind of wave shaping. You could scan trough the whole selection of additional waveforms (69 of them). Additionally you could modulate the mix of Osc1 and Osc2. If you use the "Differential Unison Engine" you could even use differnt waveforms (+ morphs and waveform scanning) for each of the Unison voices.
Last but not least Dune could do some nice FM which you could combine with the additional waveforms and/or waveform morphs. Again this could be used differently for each voice of the Unison (via the mod matrix).

You could also use different filter settings for each unison voice (including filter type which is available as a mod destination).
