there are a few in such a thread that have this little resentment if they encounter the notion of people that want to go further into music than they have the desire to do. this is typically expressed in 'you may as well build your own guitar then' (Grow your own trees and design your own bandsaw, too. Create your own planet...). Reduce the idea to the absurd.ariston wrote:seems to me that the only ones who keep flogging this dead horse are the ones who are defensive about using presets. I didn't read that much "hate" or even ridicule in this thread at all. I think the fairly common consensus is that you do what you gotta do to and use what you gotta use.
when I first had my hands on a synth, it was a minimoog and there was no such thing as presets. you had to figure out what your bases were. I don't know what it did out of the box and factory settings, we bought one used. at some point there was a card you could get somewhere which showed famous songs' settings. like, ELP iirc.
when I worked with a DX7, there were a number of presets on 2 ROM cartridges and this is how you learned. Also there was a class in SF where someone that was pretty involved at Yahama (lotta the presets were his) showed quite a lot.
I use Absynth a lot, and the difference for me between an init and someone else's work is the former is typically less time-consuming because the latter is typically so idiosyncratic. I know what I'm looking for and how to apply Absynth's ways.
My Kore browser has a ridiculously large selection of cute names that don't mean a lot to me and my preferred organization relies on my own patches for some reason. With Reaktor Skanner I always start with one of a couple or three presets. I'm hard pressed to know any other approach. There are very useful starting points with Reaktor Spark and Steampipe, pretty involved synthesis, where init is going to involve a great expenditure of time.
I'm in the middle of this continuum.
But don't be coming out with 'you may as well build your own guitar', let alone try to come up with some crap analogy or bogus logic as if it's going to support you, because it's just completely f**king stupid.
