what is the free VST compatible midi/audio sequencer to go for when you're a Cubase SX2 loving fool with no money?

I need one of those, cause I'm one of those.

Disclaimer: haven't used Cubase, not really familiar with it.

But, from what I know, you could look at Computer Muzys (comes free on the CD included with every Computer Music magazine). You could also use K-v-R's search capability under "Instruments, Hosts, etc." and search for free hosts for your environment (Mac, Win). When I do that, specifying free VST-capable hosts for Windows, I get 14 entries (not all of which will do what you want, I suspect, but they're a starting point to look).

One in particular, that's probably worth a close look is Kristal.

thanks dave

yeah i guess i should have provided a bit more info.
I'm on PC and i'm looking for something to combine midi sequenced drums through VST instruments, with audio recorded multitracks (also with VST processing going on).

Kristal looks interesting....gonna have a closer look.

I'm beginning to fear that :( Kristal looks allright for audio as you said VitaminD...but as far as I can tell from my brief look there isn't much midi power in it...if any at all?

Man, I'm also a Cubase addict, for around 15 years now, actually...but lately I got addicted to EnergyXT which I wholeheartedly recommend. It is so inspireing and easy to work with. I'm definitely considering buying EnergyXT also because it's dirt cheap, especially if you take in account its capabilities. Great stuff, you won't regret it. Try the demo... that's how my addiction started :D and I see Cubase less and less... I'm also one of "those who hate bright colours" and never got used to having white background in Cubase, it just hurts my eyes, so I use EnergyXT also because you can do whatever TF you want with the user interface and the executable is only 650KB :P . http://www.xt-hq.com/ is the site. My regards to a genious called Jorgen :D

Thats great...but I can't play the guitar, I can't play the piano, I can't play anything at all.

And I sure as hell can't sing :-o

...I need midi sequencing sooo bad. :D

Read on the Kristal site that midi is planned in a future version, so I will be keeping an eys on that for sure.

EnergyXT is a bit lacking on the audio side, but that's changing very quickly and the MIDI side is just fantastic. I mean the piano roll, automation, CC... everything is so intuitive and if you own a sampling drum machine like RMIII/IV, DR008 or maybe Battery or excellent non sampling drum machine like Attack or free Drumatic, you're on... and multitracking in eXT is more and more similar to excellent Acid every day. Damn, I sound like a commertial for EnergyXT :D . But it's really that good and simple. Jorgen's been developing it for yeaz and yeaz now. Cheers, beers and VST. GDay. 8)

Not free, but look for Cubase SE - $99.95 at zzounds or Musician's Friend. 48 audio tracks, unlimited MIDI tracks, up to 16 VSTI, upward compatible & upgradeable.

Given you really want MIDI and hardly want audio, then you're right: Kristal isn't it (right now). I'm guessing CM Studio is your best bet (about $15US for a copy of the Mag, some learning time, and you're home free).

If VSTi's aren't that important (cuz you've got external hardware), then you might want to take a look at Jazz++ (www.jazzware.com). It's a bit dated perhaps, but pretty capable, and there's an active open source community project recently started to update it.

There's tracktion which AFAIK can both do audio recording and MIDI/VST. Its not free, but is very cheap ($80) and lots of people swear by it:

I'm not sure if it's still available, but have a look around the steinberg FTP for "Cubasis InWired"

Haven't tried this myself but Music Studio Independence looks like a Cubase (I think)

If you want free music program, may I suggest you also take a look into the tracker world.

In BUZZ, Psycle and Skale trackers you can use VSTi.s and VST.s.

In trackers sequencing is done from up to down instead from left to right. Pianorolls as they are called are divided to ticks, so its not so easy to get groove to beats as in sequensers, but you can go around this with some easy tricks.

Some people have said that they are hard to learn, but I dont think so. Read manuals and they make perfect sense.
