Is there a safe way to buy a license key based product second hand? I'm looking to buy ableton 9 suite, but so far found one scammer on the ableton forum who fortunately was too stupid to catch anyone out. The other seller was on here, and when i offered to pay asking price he replied he wasn't comfortable selling to someone with negligible post count.

So firstly is there a safe way to do a key transaction? And secondly given PayPal etc wont help on non physical goods, is there any circumstance in which the risk isn't all on me, the buyer?

At this rate I'm going to end up learning logic instead, because I can bear the retail price of that! :)

This just happened to me. I have a lot of good feedback posts in the marketplace thread, but the guy who was selling had none and few posts. He agreed to first do the license transfer and then accept payment. I sent him PayPal as soon as I authorized the software and left him good feedback.

Right, that is what I was expecting, to have to send the money first so all risk was on me. Is there anyway the seller could have lost out? I don't think PayPal would have been willing to help me claw back given the nature of the goods. Really quite surprised by the rejection!

Maybe I'm too trusting, but I've bought guitars across the Atlantic, high performance car exhaust from Greece and never yet had a problem!

On the plus side he saved me 400 usd, and I kinda dig logic anyway. Just the decent online tuts all seem to be ableton centric so I wanted to work along with them.

Well, there's a really great Live demo you could use in the mean time. Just keep posting in this forum and become part of the community.

The thing I find with internet forums is that its easy to spend all your time talking about doing things, rather than getting off the forum and doing them. Massive time sink, so I've weaned myself off that having fallen into that trap before!

I guess the answer to the original question is that all the sale risk would have been on me, so the seller wasn't really being entirely rational about this. Never mind, will go logic which seems like slightly better for what I want to do in terms of automation etc. If I had both I'd get sucked into the trap of learning two daws rather than production!

Anyway thanks for taking the time to reply!
