Following an introductory book to music theory it says that if the frequency is doubled, the sound wave is increased by an octave.

How do I do this in ableton, are there any instruments with frequency knobs? I tried changing the frequency of something but it had a different effect to raising the octave.

Is there a very basic instrument in ableton I can use to test the theory covered? Something where I can visually view the sound waves and change their frequency, pitch etc to hear the effects? Or would you recommend using something else?

Thanks.

drop the spectrum plugin included in LIVE to view frequencies and there are also free oscilloscope plugins on the web as well. Use the oscillator octave control in Analog to increase or decrease the frequency range or Operator

Not quite. 'sound wave' isnt terminology that makes sense here. 'Octave' is used more in the realms of 'notes' than 'frequencies', but like 'doubling' here it basically does refer, relatively, to frequency. So if you double the frequencey of something it will be an octave higher. If you play something an octave higher, it will be at double the frequency than before. They are the same thing.

That's not enough information to work out what you've done, 'different effect' doesnt give us enough information.

Frequency and pitch are the same thing.

To be honest, though, that's getting into synthesis not music theory. Just recording stuff into the Arangement view in Live and looking at it there will display anything relevant to music theory just as easily.

Really helpful advice, thanks guys. It appears on further research what I'm really after is learning synthesis as opposed to music theory.

I notice the spectrum device displays the frequencies etc. Is there some way I can view this in wave form and adjust the frequency manually?

Indeed I didn't notice that the "operator" sound wave actually changes on manual edit. Many thanks.

Sonic academy has some tutorials I found useful learning is stuff. I'm by connected to them, just liked the tuts.
