Dre Beats Pro Headphones: good studio headphones?

Hey guys, I'm really considering buying these headphones, but want to seek your advice before I waste so much money on a pair of headphones

First of all, is the sound quality really that good on these headphones?

Second, which headphones would you recommend that I buy instead of these for relatively the same price?

From what I got by reading several GERMAN reviews, the Dr. Dre headphones are quite good for listening bass-emphasized music (like hip hop), but not recommended for use in a professional studio because of the "distortion" (falsification) of the tone color...

I like em better than my AKG headphones. Bought the AKGs for flat response, but the beats get used more. Keeps me from mixing too much bass in. I got mine for free and another pair of Monster DNA headphones with a connect at Monster. The DNA are better. A little flatter response, but still great bass and much lighter. The AKGs are great too, but have ordered two sets of ear pads for them because they get all sticky and wear out. AKG's were about $200.

Buy a pair of headphones from a reputable manufacturer of pro audio equipment that have designed the headphones for flat frequency response if you are going to use them to mix with. If you just want some good headphones for some Electronica, Dubstep, Hip Hop, Trance, etc and want bass you can feel, the Beats are alright to me. I like em for almost everything, but the battery changing is kind of expensive. Don't know if they are priced right as I didn't pay for mine, but seems a little expensive for what they are. Nice design, but a little heavy too.

If you are going to spend hours mixing with headphones, weight becomes a factor. If you have a lot of external noise in your listening area, think about noise canceling headphones for sure, but again, you need to look at frequency response.

I use these all the time in the studio to check low frequencies and as an extra "consumer reference"

They're very good when you're on the road because you can hear the kick and bass nicely , so when you're back in the studio you can actually continue to work on the track instead of having to change the kick and bass sounds like with most other high end headphones (for techno/house/hiphop).

BUT they're pretty heavy and kind of uncomfortable when working with them for some hours straight.

If you don't produce bass driven music like techno/house/hiphop you probably would be better off with some other
high end studio headphones as I would not consider these top quality.

Well, the fact of the matter is that I'm looking for some bass enhanced headphones because my studio monitors are the KRK Rockit 8's and they exaggerate the bass a little bit, so I'm looking for something that portrays sound similarly to my KRK's, that way, I don't have to come home and change everything because it sounded different on my headphones. Plus, when it comes to mixing, i don't usually mix on my headphones, I merely use them as a reference.

I liked the Beats Pro phones but not enough to dump My KRK KNS 8400 (urban - electronic) and Sennheiser HD 600's (everything else) I also use the Focusrite VRM box.

Rokit 8 exaggerates the bass ? :O I bought the subwoofer because to me there was not enough bass (they don't go under 40Hz also if I remember well).

For the Beats, I think their price are insane, all based on the hype. Personally I bought mine at 25€ while a trip in Asia and I recommend you to do the same.

If I was you, I would buy a good headphone with near-flat response for monitoring your mixes, master and even sound desing (sometimes I go crazy with fx while sounddesign on my woofers, then I put the headphone and I heard all the dirt I wasn't hearing),
my recommendation would be Beyerdynamic DT-770, 880 or 990 (because I own them, but maybe someone would recommend something even better).

770 has the most bassy sound, but a bit too much muffled to my taste. Better isolation too because they are closed cans.

880 is known for having the most detailed bass. Many neurofunk producers are using it. Silky higs, the stereo image is more wide than with the 770. Semi-opened cans.

the 990 is not as bassy as the 770 but more than the 880, the more round and warm bass of the 3. Less detailed than the 880 though. I find the bass less muddy than the 770. Crystal clear highs but can be harsh with long use or bad over-limiter mp3 full of nasty highs ^^ The stereo image is huge first time I used them I could only hear the side information all the mono content was buried behind by my brain.

Be careful there is different versions, with ohms, the biggest at 250 ohms can't be driven properly by feeble amps or something like that.

Price around 150€ for DT-770 and 990. Around 250€ for 880. Beats at 399$ are far more expensive.

And I would buy a hifi headphone or something like that to complement for dirt cheap ^^

I'm sure someone will be able the recommend other good bass headphones or monitor headphones for not so expensive than the beats ones.

Don't bother with that sad excuse for "pro headphones".
AH-D600 are by far the best headphones in that price range. Those are REAL "pro headphones", with an emphasis on accurate sound reproduction, with superb detail.

Defective on the official stand in the shop? I don't think so.
I'm sure they sound sick on da beatz yo, viv all dat sick bass but for anybody who isn't a gangsta I'd look elsewhere.

the sound quality of these headphones is really bad. bass is completely over-emphasized and the trebles are almost completely missing. the success of the beats headphones is just due to marketing hype and a lot of kids who think that these headphones look cool. and the price for such a pair of bad sounding phones is ridiculous. buy some nice akg or sennheiser or beyerdynamic headphones instead. if you like music rich in bass then buy dj headphones from these companies and for a lower price you get some good sounding phones with a nice bass foundation that do not neglect the other parts of the frequency spectrum.
