Also good to speak to you mate/catch up as it has been awhile. I hope you are doing well and life is treating you good man.
Thanks! Doing ok - EQuilibrium was a LOT of work - catching back up on life, slowly :)
There is still a plan to set up a Mod exchange for Compassion; I think that'd be pretty cool.
Good to hear from you too! :D

I also love my LiquidMix Dave which you did right?
Not directly. I worked on Liquid Channel; fixed the dynamics there, built some of the measurement gear, and did the EQ.
Same stuff was lifted up from there for LM, but not by me.
Its a shame they didn't take it further IMO,
...that's what compassion is...
Edit: And EQuilibrium for that matter.

Cheers!

Dave.

Still pondering. (it should not escape the observant, that having finished EQuilibrium now, I am on the lookout for a new quest...)
That'd be great! I've been hoping you'd release a COMPact for a while now. I helped a friend mix a record at his appartment, and it was my first time using the most recent version of Logic. There's a compressor in there that does just that and offers a few different circuits/modes. I thought it was a pretty solid compressor and really liked the ergonomics of it. If you were to go that route, do you think you would build in different saturation stages too?
Weeeeeellll. I wouldn't want to do it that exact way.
I'm thinking more about representing my notebooks; so maybe (an ever expanding list of) compressors/units down the left hand side, some standard buttons at the top, a few analysis graphs as standard, and an area which loads up controls from the unit modelled. Maybe some discussion about the model, what it does, what it doesn't do, etc.

Might be an interesting idea. I'm not sure. Maybe it's too nerdy an approach. As you can see, I am definitely still pondering. :)

Yes, it is, but it's a very specific, controllable nonlinear element!

So it's a linear non-linearity? :D

Dave what about 2254/33609?
How would you desribe those?

Heh. No. :P

Also, just to be clear, it's not in the audio path. You never hear the signal that comes out of it.

Just wanted to clarify that :D

Closely related. :D

Didn't we do 2254 earlier?
With diode bridge based VCA?

Oh, the thread grew a few pages since I last posted and I didn't catch up=)
Yeah, that one.
I one how the compression behavior differs between diode-bridge and other types.
I seem to remember reading that those comps have something of a sigmoid attack shape (might be misinterpreting or plainly wrong on this).

50% curve law with compassion. Sorta means there are two AR stages. But I don't think they do.
I'll take another look later. I need to go out and get some more milk.

Dave, first of all let me thank you for sharing the vast amount of knowledge you have.
One petition; please do a couple of videos/tutorials. I'm very happy with EQuilibrium and Compassion, and with some tutorials I would be able to really take advantage of your plugins.

I do RTFM and follow your posts, but a video would be awesome (if possible).
TIA. :)

That's definitely a plan. It's been agreed. Just need to work out what order I'm going to do things in!

I was wondering if you could comment on the venerable Alesis 3630. I know its basically garbage, but I've been using them in non-music A/V applications for a long time, and know it better than any other compressor.
It's a dbx160 with cheaper components and a higher noisefloor.

Dave.

So is the 3630 actually not as bad as they use to say, or is the 160 just a polished turd?

Heh.

Which 160?
There are, like, ten or something.

The 3630 is FINE for live use, it's just a bit noisy, and not especially exciting.

Maybe a good mental model for this is:
Did you ever have a really old mixer/desk? Where all the faders crackled as you moved em, and there was a semi-permanent hiss/hum?
And one day, you upgraded, and that noise went away.
That's the TYPE of difference between e 3630 and the 160, except its more subtle than the picture I've painted. Same sorta thing, just better. And frankly I don't like the feel of the 3630 knobs. They feel cheap.

Ok here are some examples of the Drawmer 1969 and the Alesis 3630

Hope I got it all right. RMS level matched.

I did an acoustic drum example (from the portico test) and an electronic drum sample because just the acoustic sample wasnt so representative I felt.

In terms of setting in the end I decided to do one setting per compressor and example. I just set them in a way that I felt suited the sources and compressors, and pushed a tad - rather than light and extreme for the sake of it.

So the dry files are in there. Also compressed examples:

Acoustic 3630 settings: Att around 30ms Release 150ms Hard knee -6db GR
Acoustic 1969 settings: Att 25ms Release 100ms - 3 db GR 100hz high pass filter

Electronic 3630 settings: Att around 30ms Release 60ms Hard knee -9GR
Electronic 1969 settings: Att 25ms Release 100ms -4.5 db GR 100hz high pass filter
Electronic 1969 settings: Att 25ms Release 100ms -7 db GR
