I've uploaded a small section of the blade runner soundtrack. http://rapidshare.com/files/26354293/bl ... s.mp3.html

The strings in the background... are they made with the "string-machine" or something else ? What could bring me close to this sound ?

Cheers,

A roland VP 330 would give you the exact same sound, minus the effects V used on it.

You can get close to that sound with some knowledge of how to EQ a sound, a synth that can do a sawtooth wave (pretty much all of them) and some (or a lot) of chorus :)

I've used a CS-80V, which turns out to come pretty close if you tweak it in the right way.

A few songs i used it in:

http://moonbase69.nl/mp3/Mare%20Tranquillitatis.mp3 (in the ending and somewhere halfway the tune)

http://moonbase69.nl/mp3/Mischievous.mp3 (all over the song)

http://moonbase69.nl/mp3/Frogtears.mp3 (also all over)

Enjoy!

a vp330 made most of the vangelis pads in this area of time ... in bladerunner it's definately a vp330 ...
btw, your file to download is 15kb big, and cannot be played ... at least here ...
ahh payt69 beat me to it already ... ;)

You've been searching for this 'flute' and never found it because it's not a flute, but oboe. At least it has that characteristic 'reedy' oboe timbre, whether it's a sample or synthesised, who knows, but it's not a flute.

Most sample-based workstation-type instruments will have an oboe.

No. It also sounds like an oboe. Like in the other example. There is no flute in any of these examples.

Thanks Himalaya :)

Do you know any Oboe VST that is close to that sound ?
I tried with Edirol, but it didnt sound nothing like the one Vangelis used.

The sample in your Edirol will sound different because samples of the same instrument made by different companies will just sound different. No getting around it.

Vangelis uses (or used) a lot of Korg keyboards so I'd imagine the oboe could've been made on one of his Korgs.

I just tried to mock up that line in Roland TTS-1 which is bundled with Sonar and which may be similar to your Edirol (Roland = Edirol = General Midi). The problem I had is with the attack. In the Vangelis piece the attack is nicely controlled with smooth fade-ins. In TTS-1 I found it impossible to do, so I did it via envelopes - which is very crude and definitely not as nice sounding if it was a real-time performance (with the attack/volume controlled via a mod wheel, for example). Also, each note is articulated by Vangelis in a very beautiful way - I certainly didn't have the patience to emulate each note in the same way so my example sounds different (rough!).

This is the stock preset from TTS-1, unaltered (with Valhalla Vintage Verb).

Other sample based instrument may give you a closer sound.
