This is one reason to prefer dongles over C/R, in spite of how often people complain about them. At least if you already own the dongle, this kind of thing isn't really a big concern, and you can also move the license around easily.

I agree. I tend to prefer dongles over C/R, of course, I prefer straight serial over both. I'm not ready to take the iLok plunge yet though. I've ready way too many horror stories of premature dongle death.A.M. Gold wrote:This is one reason to prefer dongles over C/R, in spite of how often people complain about them. In fact, if you aren't as big as Ableton but you use C/R, you will likely lose me as a customer on the next computer upgrade. I tend to not bother re-validating plugins that are C/R only. I just sort of forget about them and move on.
Examples include, I think, FXExpansion? Aren't there CM versions C/R? I used to have something by them installed, whatever came before geist. I've forgotten, I just didn't bother after the last upgrade.
Companies like Uhe, however, that trust their customers with a simple serial, earn my repeat business. I have more paid Uhe products than I have from any other small vendor. Granted, that's not many, but I don't think twice about buying his stuff.
Small vendors should think about this. I may buy a product on impulse, I might use it for a while, but the C/R choice may keep you from earning a loyal repeat customer.
I've long learned, I freeze my tracks when I'm done with a project in case something doesn't work in the future.

I just read up in the Waves help section that as long as the computer is the same I should be good to go. I really like Waves personally although im a new customer to them.
I'm going to contact Waves to see if ill be able to keep a klicense on the USB too just in case. But if not thats understandable for theft protection. I really do like Waves system of knowing the computer. Very easy to do too.

I think I dont like USBs because if i ever do a live show once i get things going then it might get in the way. Challenge response C/R is like internet authentication right? That seems to suit me well and seems to fit the bill for both people. The seller and the consumer.

Fair enough, but not all C/R copy protection works flawlessly. I've had major problems with a certain company because their f***ing site is down every 30 mins and they use challenge/response, which unfortunately relies on their inferior servers. Visit their On the other hand, I've always used the USB eLicenser and I've never had any problems with it.MadAnthony81 wrote:I think I dont like USBs because if i ever do a live show once i get things going then it might get in the way. Yea, but that brings up the whole point of this conversation----the limits companies put on the number of authorizations. Which brings up the bigger point which is that no one has come up with the perfect solution to copy protection yet.MadAnthony81 wrote: Challenge response C/R is like internet authentication right? No, not exactly. For my money, propellerheads is leading the way these days with copy protection. Ok, they were better at version 5 with serial only, but, given that most large companies want more than that, they do it right.MadAnthony81 wrote:thanks SAmmy SAAmy SAmmy himbo. JK

1) Dongle authentication, use your dongle on any computer.
2) Authorize one computer to run without your dongle, this is "challenge/response"
3) Internet authorization, this requires password every time you run, but you can run from any machine.
4) Useful demo mode. If none of the above are working, you can still do some work, you can save it even, but you can't load existing files.
The thing is, you get all of the above. So I have it authorized on my laptop to run without the dongle, installed on my work laptop for when I'm traveling to use with internet authentication and I run it on my desktop at home with the dongle, or, on my other laptop in my DJ studio with either the dongle or internet authentication. I only run one copy at a time, but I don't feel hassled about having to reinstall it to a different machine.
Internet authentication is fine so long as I can reinstall without hassle. The problem comes when your installs are limited.
