1) +/- 18db. Then put that little blurb in the manual and explain that if you want to be more "authentic" - just go up to +/-15db.

Unless there was something fancy in the knob graphics that could make something go red (or whatever colour) when the knob passes 15db.

2) You could get around this dilemma by having two seperate modules - and basically copy/paste the code - except for the limits of the knobs.

Otherwise - like # 1 I'd say make it go +/- 15db, and put a blurb in the manual explaining hos stopping at +/-6db makes an accurate mastering model.

Just MHO ;-)

Well, for this specific model, offering +/-18 gives a slightly different gain-q interaction than the +/-15 version. Very slightly.
With the other one, however, its exactly the same, best I can tell, and just using the shorter range is identical.

I'm pretty sure that for model 2 I'm going to leave the full range available and limit it, but I'm more uncertain what to do with 1, where it will change the interaction.

i say keep true to the original.

How about creating a new mode (maybe known as "restricted mode") for some of the knobs?

It could work like this:
- Right clicking on a knob will let you enter the "restricted mode"-pop up.
- pop-up lets you define gain range if it's a gain knob
- pop-up lets you define frequency range if it's a freq knob
- Entering "restricted mode" should change the look of the knob so you could visually see it's in another mode.

I am obviously talking about knobs here. But I guess you should link the restricted behaviour with the graph.
A restricted knob mode could also let you implement the opportunity to enter stepped frequencies in the frequency pop-up. That way you could mimic the behaviour of certain eq:s that offer predefined frequencies.

Hi Dave,

We live in a world of having the cake and eating it too, do we not ;)

Being a trimmer on the actual board means that it is a calibration. I doubt that many people broke open the unit to adjust those screws between projects... but I could be wrong. I also say stay true to the original stock setting. Otherwise, I thought something along the line of what Inger suggested could be a possibility but I don't know how you would implement that for just that one model. I really don't think that is a huge concern in the first place. 15dB is hefty but the other models you've done go 18 both ways as well. (As an aside, those models that do not go 18+/- show in the numerical readout that they ARE going -18db ;) But on the graph they are not actually reaching that amount cut -- ex: the 250)

what effect will such a calibration have on the Q at 18+/-? If it is offer a tonal difference it may be interesting inclusion.

About the second EQ model that ships in two flavours,... if there is no other difference then go with the 15dB and simply make mention in the manual about this and/or perhaps an option in the preferences to limit the cut/boost of that model.

Just my thoughts. Excited to try the new models!

Having the same exact issue with 1.05 just FYI

I demo'd this yesterday and am blown away by how nice it sounds. Will see out the demo period and then probably be grabbing this. It fattens up kick drums like nothing else...

I couldn't find the GML emu though - which one is it?

Post

Hi Kindred

There isn't a GML model in Equilibrium at present. However, Dave has been adding more types. SSL4000 E peaks are currently being added. :)

If you consider that it already has the four options of the Sony Oxford EQ and that there is a version of the sonnox that has a GML emulation, I wouldn't be hugely surprised if EQuilibrium did get a GML model in the future :)

The "250" is modeled on an equally classic mastering EQ (Sontec MEP-250EX) if you are after something super sexy for full mixes. Try analog phase and the 250 in parallel mode for boosts, super nice! :)

Cheers

I once thought I had mono for an entire year. It turned out I was just really bored...

Does anyone know if equilibrium can emulate the sound of maag eq's high shelf boost? The maag seems to have really strange curves all over the spectrum when boosting highs.

I thought 8k2 is GML?

Post

Ah yes, you are absolutely right!

I didn't realise that 1.05 has been released already! I thought it was still in beta :)

8K2 is the GML 8200 Peak. Also the SSL4000 E peak has been added.

Cheers

Sorry about that, we managed to misplace that bug. I've stuck it on the list and Dave will attend to it asap.

For those that missed it, 1.05 is out :

AAX2.0 and PT11 compatibility.
Small manual update
Fix Butterworth and 4kg shelves.
Fix Logic Surround layout
Fix tooltip fadeout.
Fix spurious locked-in-autolisten bug.
Added 8k2 peak...
Added 4ke peak... (brown,black)
Fix crash bug with AAX2.0 AudioSuite in PT11
Added pref to show meter readouts as peak or live. (peak is default)
Added new Units presets
Preference to control compression for presets/session saves.

Sweet Krzysztof, looking forward to the fix

I would have called it 6i1L (8K2) :)

What's the difference between "4ke brown/black" and "4ke brown/black CT"?
