I tried to avoid it !
How do sound designers create that squashed transient on kickdrums ?

my first rms compressor builds looked like this. i didn't think people built them that way on purpose.
larms notch eq technique will do the same thing on some samples, eg. a 909 has a fast pitch envelope down to ~50Hz, so if you notch at say 250Hz, the volume will be reduced for that portion of the attack.

Compressor with just the right (very fast) attack and release settings so it catches the transient and opens up again right after it.
The Glue for example has a preset called 'catch the peaks', Stillwell's Rocket could probably also do it (since it's very fast if desired) and I also find that Toneboosters Reelbus can round the transients nicely.

so i did build it right

i call it "beating the hell out of whatever comes after the peak"

@xoxos ; I'll try an eq. I just wanted to say, man i love your plugins, fantastic work !
@No_Use ; I've tried the glue and the rocket and even though they are fast, it doesn't quite work, the release shape is more sloped, whereas these kicks appear to have a square join of punch and body (if that makes any sense).
I'll keep experimenting. If i can achieve it via a compressor i'll be satisfied, it just seems as though im missing something which may even be ovious or a misconception.
Anyway, thank you thank you thank you for your help its most appreciated. I'll keep experimenting, if i find it i'll be sure to post.

i pretty much forgot about compression by synthesizing everything, so i'm ignorant beyond fundamentals. explaining my enthusiasm for the subject:

i found these wavs in my folder from developing an rms compresser.. they're obviously what you'd get if the coefficients are wiiildly off.. and, not being a compressor buff, i didn't know that lips were good.
dunno if it helps, but i used a fixed rms detector and variable a/d response rates... i don't know if others configure the a/d into the rms detector.. but if they do it the way i did, the "dent" was more about the rms rate than the a/d rate
conveivably, one could configure both the rms and the response with separate a/d rates..
course, a graphic envelope would work too

That is really interesting. I'll have to find a suitable compressor. Have you released a compressor plugin !?xoxos wrote:i pretty much forgot about compression by synthesizing everything, so i'm ignorant beyond fundamentals. explaining my enthusiasm for the subject:

no, but i released an amp sim plugin. from my perspective, it's essentially the same. there's no point in me releasing a compressor because there are so many people who will trash it. i prefer to release things assholes can't figure out.
who'd be able to sell compressors for $200 afterwards if people like me were allowed to seem good?

Question you want to ask is, what are people using to synthesize kicks?
Most of them, if not all of the drum synthesizers out there have exponential curves.

Top is linear, it would create a linear rise, bottom is exponential or Logarithmic, depending on how it's fine tuned you can create a sudden rise.
So, it could be a modulation of volume.

I would use a transient designer aka envelope shaper for this task too. A compressor could be useful but chances are high to squash unwanted stuff too so for me a transient designer and perhaps a gate afterwards.Xenobt wrote:Go Fish!!!The answer you may be looking for is contained in the thread title!
Lots of artists use transient shapers like the EXCELLENT SPL Transient Designer to get attacks squashed and bring the body of the sound out. It lets you get much more beef into your drums without adding more peak volume.
Transient designers can work in reverse too, sharpening attacks even further and suppressing the sustained material. It's a good trick for "de-reverbing" drums.
There's several types out there for different DAWs, here's a free one from the fine folks at Flux!

A gate for its release shape on the tail of the kick ? I must try that.Halma wrote:I would use a transient designer aka envelope shaper for this task too. A compressor could be useful but chances are high to squash unwanted stuff too so for me a transient designer and perhaps a gate afterwards.

Which reminds me i was going to update here, so far the best progress i've made is by layering. It takes alot of tweaking to get the two to sit right but its the closest i have got.

Update ; I think i might of cracked it, it might be the effect of tape. We know it tames transients in a nice way and i have tried tape emulations before but even though some saturated the spikes, it didn't do this fish effect.
This was accidental but i was running sMexoscope while working on drums and while experimenting with emulating OTB recording and processing stages, (eg ; eq/comp/sat/tape then repeated on the channel while mixing) i happened to try Nomad Magnetic 2 and lo and behold - fish lips !
Not only that but it sounded just like a kick rounded by tape, thumped the way i wanted it to and had turned a pretty awful kick into a good one. Its worth noting that not all the emulations on Magnetic did this and i think the 'tape colour' function contributed towards it.
Following this up with ArtsAcoustic CL comp gave me the perfect little rounded punchy tight kick with plenty of body and no peaks.
Happy days ! Thanks you gentlemen

I want to clarify, was it really fish lips or maybe nipple?FeelingMachine wrote:and lo and behold - fish lips !
