Hi everyone :) Cheers from Ukraine. I discovered KVRaudio few months ago. But I really enjoy it! And idea of song with one synth is great too. Nothing begets creativity so much as a healthy bit of restriction.
Here is my submission:
Spacefield
I have no idea how to embed SC widget, so here's link http://soundcloud.com/stunkit/stunkit-spacefield
• DAW: Cubase 5.1;
• ~30 instances of the synth;
• FXs: roomworks, compressor, monodelay, dualfilter, multiband compressor, maximizer, limiter;

Welcome, and good luck in the competition!

I suppose a lot of reverbing is against the rules, right? (as in taking a little snare and turning it into a spectacularly sounding gong)

Nup. That's the point. It's all about creativity.Kondarivan wrote:I suppose a lot of reverbing is against the rules, right? (as in taking a little snare and turning it into a spectacularly sounding gong)
It just needs to be a free reverb.

The problem is not the plugin; but it kinda counts as making the sound "unrecognizable as being from the synth", isn't it?

That comment mainly refers to pitch effects AFAIK.Kondarivan wrote:The problem is not the plugin; but it kinda counts as making the sound "unrecognizable as being from the synth", isn't it?

That would actually be some really good news. I'm curious about what V'ger thinks.Mushy Mushy wrote:That comment mainly refers to pitch effects AFAIK.Kondarivan wrote:The problem is not the plugin; but it kinda counts as making the sound "unrecognizable as being from the synth", isn't it?

Oh yes absolutely.Kondarivan wrote:I'm curious about what V'ger thinks.
This is just my own personal interpretation of the rules, so don't quote me

Side observation: I just found out why my envelope 1 release parameter was jumping like crazy. It's because I was automating expression and the parameter was assigned to CC43 (expression LSB). So, if you prefer using the modulation matrix for automating things based on mod wheel/aftertouch/expression, unlearning some parameters could come in handy

Hi. If u mean some of sounds in my track (snare?), point me the time and I'll tell you what I was using there.Kondarivan wrote:I suppose a lot of reverbing is against the rules, right? (as in taking a little snare and turning it into a spectacularly sounding gong)

Also I noted some disadvantages of this VSTi. Here's what i think:
1. No automation for OSC pitch, because it's drop-down menu (DD). So I can't draw my melody or glide effect with mouse. I think it's better to make pitch as rotary for octave, notes and cents;
2. No panner rotary and no option for LFO -> panner;
3. Very important: to make switch buttons to chose next LFO wave, for example. Because it's very annoying always click for drop-down menu, and select next wave. Same thing needed for ring modulation type DD menu;
4. Glide (portamento) works only between over-crossed notes. I don't like such mechanic. I want it work always I activated it.
5. Reduce options in modulation 1st DD menu, fore example LFO+ and LFO- to LFO, and make rotary to be in center. Than if u turn this left — it will be LFO- amount, if right — LFO+ amount.
Smth like that:

6. Make better user manual, specially for ARP and ENV Exp and Db modes. I didn't get anything with manual.
Advantages:
- it's cute;
- not complicated thought;
- great factory presets;
- free
PS: PM me my mistakes in posts, and I will correct it.

Yes welcome here Stunkit
About Osc pitch, I can see you would need a knob for writing melody with it (never thought of this before), but for other things, can't you get things done with the LFO on it? There are some useful shapes there.
Panner I see is missing in other synths too, but I suppose the idea is that the track panner is to be used? Chris?

What's acceptable level of effects is still not settled as the views are so varying. Yes a lot of reverb can really transform the original sound, but so will plain EQ if you think about it. The rule goes at unrecognizable, and in my opinion that means completely so. In other words, would it stand up in court if you turned up and down the effect? Can it still be said to be recognizable? For me a lot of reverb will never completely mask the sound, but for example distortion will. Point is that it's so unscientific that you must decide for yourself what you think is right, and people voting will have their own views etc. My own view is that we want as nice tracks as possible, and effects like reverb helps with that. But I know there are some purists as well who would like no effects at all, so..Kondarivan wrote:I suppose a lot of reverbing is against the rules, right? LOL no, I'm referring to the track I'm currently working at.stunkit wrote:Hi. Just set a mod wheel (or expression or aftertouch, whatever you find more comfortable) routing to osc1 pitch in Feldspar's mod matrix, and automate that. Setting the modulation amount to maximum gives you all the range you would ever need.1. No automation for OSC pitch, because it's drop-down menu (DD). So I can't draw my melody or glide effect with mouse. I think it's better to make pitch as rotary for octave, notes and cents;
True, I would have loved that too, also for things like emitting the sound in one location, moving to another but leaving the delay pan in the original location, but I suppose there are lots of workarounds for this.2. No panner rotary and no option for LFO -> panner;
I think that's quite a matter of taste; some prefer it the way it works now. (I for one am completely neutral)4. Glide (portamento) works only between over-crossed notes. I don't like such mechanic. I want it work always I activated it.
Nifty idea about the +/- modulation thing.
What's with the arp? It's a pretty small and simple one. About exponential envelopes and db (which I suppose is inverse exponential), you could see this: http://www.synthmuseum.com/magazine/linexpo.html6. Make better user manual, specially for ARP and ENV Exp and Db modes. I didn't get anything with manual.
I see what you mean. One could carve a saw wave out of filtering a white noise, with just an EQ, and that would be pretty unrecognizable, so there can't be a clear distinction between allowed/not allowed effects. I guess I'll just turn the wheel halfway and hope no one minds (:What's acceptable level of effects is still not settled as the views are so varying.
