I must admit when I'm in the right mood, I simply listen to some music without thinking about how it was made.
I can switch between analyzing music and enjoying music... If I'm enjoying music, I don't think about which synth, which preset, which soundset, how many OSC, saw/triangle or square/sine, which modulations, how many attack at the filter envelope etc.
Then I simply enjoy music, like being on a cruise ship and watching the moving sea - without thinking about how many turbines are working with how much KW and how much heavy oil is consumed...

Presets are nothing, I recognize plenty of sample libraries in trailers, video game music, films, etc. I can tell if someone is using VSL, EWQL, Omnisphere, etc. so we're all using a lot of the same sounds.

Nah, but I tend to listen to music for sonic pleasure, but when I'm making music I might listen to something specific that inspired me, or just some sound or texture or feel that I remember liking, and analyze then.
Although, sure, when I'm listening to something for the first time and an interesting sound comes along, I might briefly wonder how it was made. I might also lose myself in the tunes while I'm intending to analyze.
I find it all enjoyable. And as long you can say that, it shouldn't matter!

How good is this demo..
Regardless if i use presets or not, this demo sounds better than most trance i hear these days (which is not much because all i find is infested with lame dubstep)

If you listen through their soundsets for synths (ie massive, virus, thor etc) it's pretty easy to hear the quality of the synths. With the release of Thor for ipad i once again wonder how anyone can like that synth. It sounds so dull. Massive as well. JP8000 sounds the same on all sounds. Virus sounds cool and to my surprise, so does Dune (i don't like the filters).
It's hard to judge though as not all preset demos have had use of a limiter (or some other way of making everything sound loud). Some demos you can see the volume vary a great deal between presets melodies.
Edit: With or without volume fluctuations, guess which synth was my favourite (from refx soundsets)?

As a sound designer I usually already have a personal collection of sounds.
Having said that, I will listen to the sounds that come with a synth.
If they have some goods ones then they are useable, if not that then no.
I find that the more I develop a musical style, the more I want to use my own presets.

KVR Forums and particularly the 'Instruments' section are loaded with both folks who generate libraries for others, and those who use those libraries. Manufacturers (hardware and software) rely on people who create patch libs. These patches both show off a synth's capabilities, and provide users with a baseline to build and learn from. Add-on patch libraries do the same.
Is there an issue somewhere here, with someone who has enough knowledge to create a patch from scratch - somehow interjecting superiority? If so … please raise your hands so I know who to bow to.

I ain't got time to make my own sounds!
My hardware Roland forced me to make my own sounds at one point because the presets were so bad on those XP/JV models.
Then it said, "haha, you only have 128 user slots."
That's not enough!
(Edit: I never actually used all 128 slots. I gave up a few patches in and switched to the Hyper Canvas. 
)
I generally will tweak the hell out of a preset to get it to sound right these days.
I made a Ravity bank a long time ago. That was fun. I wonder if it's still there.
But I prefer those GM-like sounds. Very dry, very little release, no filter, no vibrato, etc. and then I like to add all those things myself depending on the song.
