Here's a link to a manual for the hardware VCS3 for anyone looking to dive in more deeply:
http://www.thesynthi.de/index.php?/arch ... anual.html

It's got a bunch of patch examples at the end that offer some ideas for matrix routing. I tried to recreate Patch 4 to make a bowing effect with the joystick triggering the ring mod. Hard to say how close I actually got to the intended effect, but it sounds pretty cool.

Mr Oudin,

Why can't my install find the presets?

32bit Live
Win7
32 bit and 64 bit versions installed to separate locations
Presets to a different folder again.

Under the preset menu all I see is:

default -> default -> default
i -> gtjhffjjvsfjjcsfjhdf -> millions of up arrows.

Have reinstalled 3 times now.

:help:

"Oooh I dont know. Sounds a bit scary"
"It's not scary. You just lose a sense of who you are and all that sh!t"

Monsieur Mushy,

Did you install the Xils in a folder where you have admin rights ?

This is usually the cause of the behavioour you describe. ( And if you dont need the 64b version/or the 32b, please just install the one you need )

Ah yes ok. I'm not used to this install as admin stuff on Win7.
Let me check.

Thanks for the prompt reply :tu:

Hi all!

I hope that this will be my first OSC (I mean: if spare time will be clement! :))

The OSC is definitely a wonderful kind of opportunity to have some fun.

Just one question: does anybody else experiment stuck notes when using modes different than "circular poly"?

Thanks and good OSC 54 to everyone!

Hi and welcome :) No stuck notes here is all I can say. What system (OS, soundcard, latency (buffer size) etc) and DAW are you using? Have you tried other DAWs, asio drivers and/or latency settings?

Way cool with an original manual from 1970 like this. I like the hand drawn graphics. :D Sound examples too, excellent.

How is it possible that only 1 of the 10 XILS3 is asking for a serial (again) ?
The other nine are OK and playing but only 1 is not, and asking for the serial ?

FLstudio 10. 32Bit Host and Vst.

I tried some stuff but it is mostly number 5 (the fifth one) that is not playing and asking for the serial (again and again and again...)?

Weird :o :help:

And this is a fresh one : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/862 ... 072013.flp

Hi V'ger and thank you for your quick and kind reply!
I'm wondering if I'm missing something, but atm I cannot still understand what; I've tried the same patch (an original one) both under Zynewave Podium Free and Ableton Live 8.4.1. Podium is installed under XP SP3, Live in Win8 64-bit.
Btw I'm trying with Asio4All and DirectX and different soundcards (even onboard, Terratec Phase 26 USB, etc.). Latency = 512 samples: ok in all my Live, FL Studio, etc. projects in both these machines.

I've checked and it's not the "hold" button, of course :D

If I try to load other factory patches they are ok in "Uni2" etc., so it's something caused by this patch by me (just this one). What in this mod matrix could cause an infinite duration of the notes, that always disappears when using the "Circular Poly" mode? (in other words: is it my fault or could even be some kind of bug triggered by this particular patch?)

I know that would be easier to post a pic of the patch, but as a first try I'd like to come to the solution by rational reasoning if you don't mind (since it's interesting to understand the architecture of the synth itself).

Thanks for your ideas :)

Weird indeed and judging from your testing it seems indeed to be the synth so let's see what Lotuzia says about it.

@Yeager: Also weird and also one for Lotuzia I guess, but maybe other FL Studio users could check the project meanwhile?

Hi Enrico,

Welcome to the beauty of modular synth programming.

Yes it can happen that a patch is a "drone", or even that you've patched some things, and still there's no sound at the output, just like in any real modular synth, or even some semi modular designs.

its not easy to figure out what could cause this in your particular case. As an example of rational search, I'd take a similar patch in the factory library, then add one by one all the mods/connections you made on your patch, and at one moment you should find the cause. There's always the possibility that you found a bug, cos in the Xils3, everything can modulate everything, hopefully for the best, sometimes for the weirdiest, and sometimes, well, you might have to scratch your head to solve some non desirable things in your patch. I'd say that if all the other presets are playing OK, the possibility of a bug fades away, but still its not 101% sure. I'd also say that after a lot of years in service, and thousands of people using it, the Xils 3 has been fairly tested in probably a lot of patching configurations, as its really also a research unit.

As for the bug of an instance asking serial in FL studio, it reminds me a bug I have in Studio one -with a non xils- plug in. In this config I can't instantiate more than 4 iterations of this synth. But I can do it in other hosts  So I'd say ten is not that bad. But seriously, you should join Xils with the contact utility of the xils site, and join your project, and someone will look at this issue ( Sorry I dont have FL studio anymore )

Meanwhile, maybe a possible turnaround is to render to audio one of the tracks that use a working instance ( Obviously a track whose part is the most sure, or less subject to be modified, or the less important in the global vision of the track ), then use this working instance with the patch and the part you used for the instance that asks for the serial.

Downloaded last night and started playing with it in Logic. I'm really impressed -- this synth has a lot of character, and the interface definitely makes you think. The creative possibilities for sound design are fantastic and it has a wonderful rich filter sound. Great choice -- I'm looking forward to entering my second OSC - thanks!

Just wanted to say a big thanks to Xils for this most generous gift :hail:

Beautiful sounding oscillators that have 'that' weight to them and a lovely filter that has me totally convinced of their analog claims! Not sure why i didn't try one of their synths sooner...

Given the synths architecture, this can of course be 'accomplished' in several ways. However, in this particular case, considering the Mono/Circular symptom, i would say that you are probably feeding an Osc to an Out directly while the amp itself is uncontrolled. This will have exactly the effect you described.

For a visual reference, check the screenshot. This is my INIT preset, edited to create the effect you described. Constant signal when in Mono, triggered signal when in Circular.

Thank you V'ger and Lotuzia!

This evening / night I'll try to do some problem solving and, in case of any news, I'll keep them posted here, in case they could be useful to someone else.

Btw my first modular synth was the first version of Vaz modular :)

Later!
