What happens to Waves licenses stored on my PC if there's a crash?

I was authorizing the $19 C4 that I got in the Waves sale, and was noticing that all my Waves licenses were stored on my PC (by my choice, of course). I don't know why this didn't occur to me sooner, but is there any protection available in the event of a catastrophic crash?

Almost everything else I own is available directly from the dev's site or stored on an iLok. So if I have to buy a new computer, I'm good. I've got a backup in place for my hard drive, but I don't know if a duplicate would allow a re-authorization for the Waves stuff.

Someone suggested in another thread that you may be screwed if your WUP isn't current. Does anyone know the real procedure?

You can "recover" licenses once per year:

Not really sure about the WUP thing--it does not mention that. Might have to contact Waves directly for an answer to that, although I would have to assume that WUP will need to be active.

Also, you can store your Waves licenses on a USB flash drive instead, and it basically works as a Waves iLok type of deal. Just in case you want to move between machines or are afraid of the crash happening. Never tried it myself, though.

Thanks sockofgold. That looks like a workable solution. If i'm crashing more than once a year, I've got bigger issues than lost licenses.

I agree, I think the wise thing to do would be to move the waves licenses to a stick or back to the cloud if there's any fear of a catastrophic fault in your system.

I've moved some waves licenses around over the last 2 days. The system appears solid, and easy to use. It does it's thing way quicker than ilok synchronization.

So far, I'm liking it better than ilok.

As long as the computer itself is the same, there is no need to recover your licenses as described above.
If your licenses were activated to a USB flash drive, just connect it and you're good to go.
If your licenses were activated to the computer, make sure it's connected to the Internet, launch Waves License Center and log into your account. Your licenses will be reactivated automatically.
If your licenses were activated to a USB flash drive which has since been reformatted, connect it to your computer, launch Waves License Center and log into your account. Your licenses will be reactivated automatically.

If its a HD crash and your computer is the same there is NO 1year restriction

This. That's why Waves LC is way superior to iLok and eLicenser. And indeed, if your computer is same, you can recover your licenses as many times as you need.

You use a "cloud" with waves...your account must be accessed and that is how waves knows. So just like windows knows what computer is tied to which system, so does this. C/R operates that way afaik.

Most motherboards have network card and a common way is to use mac address on that to have a unique id.

Could be other things as well.

My notebook is still the same, but Waves plugins do not work, because I use another modem/router or docking station.
