I realize this isn't the Ableton forum exactly but since I have Live 9 intro I started messing around with it recently and I had a question... Do people use the clip follow function? Or do you just manually select clips to play for an arrangement. I was trying to set up clips to play back an arrangement with clip follows but it seems to be a real pain and not as controllable as I thought it would be? Like I used to just leave extra space on the end of clips if I wanted them to play over a duration, but was wondering if I could do something similar with clip follows...

I pretty much never use the clip follow except for when trying to come up with killer loops in a complextro style.

You have to log in to your Ableton account to see your upgrade paths and prices. Cost me £130 to upgrade from Suite 8 to Suite 9. YMMV as I believe the price has risen since then.TheKid wrote:I couldn't find any prices online. How much is the update from Live8 to Live9 and Live8 Suite to Live9 Suite?

I use it when arranging, and when I'm need of a not too repetitive drum pattern.DHR53 wrote:I realize this isn't the Ableton forum exactly but since I have Live 9 intro I started messing around with it recently and I had a question... Otherwise, I've seen some great uses for it, that I haven't really put to use beyond playing with, such as...
Say you have multiple variations of a pattern (I'm thinking melodic, but this would work great for anything)... You could select all the variations at once, choose legato in the clip edit mode and then select "* Any or * Other" (The difference being that with "any" same clips can be played back consecutively, while that won't happen in "other" following mode). Having the follow action set to something short like 1 bar, or even your choice of subdivisions can help create some instant chaos, inspiration or both.
The idea is to record all this to Arrangement view, so for those parts that worked out well, it's simply a matter of consolidating it into a new clip. This works well for both midi and audio source material.

Seems like it's easy to get the clip to do what you want vertically but it's harder to work with clips horizontally... Like I can get a group of clips to play in a sequence vertically but I can't seem to coordinate the clips playing together horizontally other than manual activation. I guess you have to set them up individually and plan how they would interact horizontally... I need to experiment more with this. Thanks for the tips!

When you have the clips playing that you want, just select 'capture and insert scene' from the create menu.DHR53 wrote:Seems like it's easy to get the clip to do what you want vertically but it's harder to work with clips horizontally... That will copy all the clips to one scene, that you can trigger on the master channel.

You can select all the clips you want, like highlight or multi-select. Then in the bottom section if you change the follow actions it will apply to all the clips at oncefunction wrote:is there a way to set it up so that all clips will follow when they are done?
