You ever hear "Kombinat M?" They didn't have a the synthy stuff but this reminds me of them when they were on their more gonzo jazzy kicks.

So far as emulative comparisons, this piece started out as a half-assed attempt at a Tsuneo Imahori vibe (Trigun, Gungrave, Hajime no Ippo) and ended up being only quarter-assed!

The horns aren't the tightest but they work and add a lot of character to this.

Yeah, I embrace the sloppiness. It wouldn't be the same if I approached it timidly! So I just go with it to catapult into the "rude attitude" zone.

Sort of a "punk brass" thing.

May favorite is the efx in the fade-out. I could make a whole 'nother song out of just that. Is it fair to like that part the most?

So long as you find *something* to like about it! That bit was a combination of OhmBoyz and HematOhm that's applied to a send from the horns. It actually goes on through the whole song (or most of it: where the horns are, at least), but the parameters are such that it does a little bit of "chaos-ducking" driven by randomness.

You™ - thanks for the review - the 'readme' of IDM ??? - i like that but ill be honest - the reason theres no bass etc in there is i couldnt see a way to fit it in - this was going to be a full-length track rather than a contest entry but i got the beats and bleeps down and then hit a brick wall in terms of bass and finishing it off ...

I know you probably don't know what I'm talking about, but your drum kit or whatever those sounds comprise the bass, electro toms, share, "ahh," hh and plinky noises are getting familiar. I don't dislike what you're doing here but it's too noodley for me. You don't have to follow any formula, but I want the composition to evolve more or suggest a feeling so well that I can't forget it. This piece doesn't do either for me, but on the other hand, some artists' work makes more of an impression when you listen to a repertoire of material rather than individual compositions. I think this "may bee" falls into that category.

but im sure you realise i find it hard in these 2 minute compositions so mainly i only take part as a part of the spirit of kvr and it gives me little chances to try new things-here as i said earlier it was more about the mix for me,trying to keep something busy undercontrol,so not to be cheeky but if you have any comments there also that would be great.

Just to second (or rather third) the iTunes endorsement! It's free, easy and very nice assuming you have either Win XP or OS X. It's even a decent database for your music or samples (It can handle WAVs, AIFFs and even others like OGGs through third-party plug-ins). You can network your playlists too!

OT: I was thinking of a shorthand term for expressing the propensity of any particular computer user to settle on a given operating system/platform and I've come up with some ugly terminology:

monoSys: A user who favors one operating system so much over another that he/she will not consider using anything else. I originally considered "Unisys," but there's a well known evil corporation that already took that name. Anyway, monsys is more like 'monophonic' the classic synth output mode.

polySys: A user who employs multiple OS/platforms, choosing whichever is best suited to a particular task based on their experience, skills or budget. I use Macs and PCs for audio work because I can and I'm pretty happy with my setup - although I need to get a faster computer one of these days.

I also considered "bisys" but that sounds so boorish. "panSys" sounds like someone guaranteed to get their lunch money stolen. "heteroSys" would be interesting, but confusing - maybe it's the people who have one kind of PC at home but must use another at work - or maybe it's those switchers! All you Linux, Amiga, Unix and others forget about "trisys," "quatrasys" or "tetrasys," etc...

Of course, you could even further compress the terms to moSys and poSys and then add arguments to specifically declare your favorite OS, ie:

moSys(WinXP)
poSys(OSX, WinXP, FreeBSD, TRS-80, Apple ][) (That's me! )

very distorted mix. Too much for my delicate ears watch your compressors and also your EQ settings: there’s more than enough bass-end. Apart from this, i enjoy the music: i can perceive some good guitar playing. Once again the ending is really abrupt.

Are you playing all this live or something? It gets a little sloppy around the 5th or 6th measure and never completely tightens up after that but I really love that big keyboard noise you use. The rhythm guitar sounds very vintage - possibly too vintage. In this mix it's too brittle. In fact, the whole sound seems so hot and aggressive that some of the subtlety has been burned away. What happened to the ending?

I think I mean what Wopelka was saying. The signal is distorting either due to improper gain staging or overdriving the effects. By "brittle" I mean the sound gets rather noisy and the smoother dynamics of the original waveform are lost because of the increased contrast in amplitude.

I hope that makes a little more sense...
