Really was a big, bold-sounding bass with a fat bottom end. So I decided to give one a go again. This one's a little dinged up, but for 1/2 the price of a new one, I can live with it. Should arrive tomorrow just in time to track the bass part on a new song I'm working away at.

Yep, that's what attracted me to the sound of that bass again when I listened to that old mix. The low end goes deep, but for some reason it sounds really tight and focused. I do recall it being very easy to mix.

New album, Chasing Fire, out now on Amazon, iTunes, etc.

The easiest bass I've ever mixed is a J Bass (all knobs up) through an Avalon U5 with the low pass engaged and set to the lowest tone setting. No further EQ necessary, just get the level and dynamics right and it's perfect every time.

I'm about 25 years too late with this, but how is acrylic for basses and guitars?

I'm thinking I might like to get a chunk of 1.5" clear acrylic to make my next bass.

It's extremely heavy. People make the mistake of trying to make strat and Ibanez RG body shapes with it, which really doesn't work because they're rather thick and thus weigh a ton. If you make the body thin and use a hard tail bridge, you could get a useable instrument out of it.

FWIW, acrylic is awesome for drums. :)

as a kid we drooled over the Ampeg Dan Armstrong Lucite guitar...my ex-half brother finally bought one in the 90s. When I was a kid I loved the idea, when I picked it up knowing what I was doing however it was very, very different. Ever spend a day chasing a good tone? Well for me a Lucite guitar would mean chasing my tail because for me there is no good tone to be found, I do like the pups that slide in and out but still none of them have the tone I want...basically I found it to be a guitar with no character at all...I love the concept though

Maybe I'll stick with wood, then.
