As far as pricing goes, I'm sure if we ask nicely they can go back to selling the product for $900 and upgrades for $250.
And the dongle, maybe we can get that back too!

this may sound like a dumb question, but is there a way for me to keep a copy of logic pro 9 and a cop of logic x on my computer so that i can use both? i don't want to lose 32 bit functionality.

All interface changes etc. are just fine. Light grey, dark grey, left or right side of screen... I can learn and get used to almost anything pretty fast, no problem. The thing I _do_ care about is the bugs, or things that just don't work like they should.
For the last couple of years, I have been collecting my personal list of Logic bugs, and there are currently over 40 entries. For example, fades are pretty much useless with flexed audio (Logic still lets you use them, they just produce all sorts of noise and clicks). You can set the gain parameter for audio regions inside take folders, but it does nothing. And speaking of take folders, they start doing all sorts of crazy stuff when your project gets bigger (they can just go silent, and soloing them does not even give them the yellow borders). Sometimes frozen tracks above a non-frozen audio track make Logic think that you can't flex audio on that non-frozen track. And sometimes you can't automate volume etc. on a frozen track, even if you clearly should. And so on.
I have learned my way around most of this stuff, but they still make my life a lot harder than it should be. The only thing I care about this point is if they have finally fixed at least some of the bugs. I'm really hoping they have re-designed and rewritten a lot of the low level stuff, and fixed a lot of bugs in the process.
But before I can try, there seem to be two obstacles on the way: I'm still on 10.6... the last time I updated OS X, many plugins just didn't work correctly any more. After a major revert process, I learned my lesson and have stayed on 10.6 ever since. But with full Time Machine backups nowadays, I guess I can try 10.8, and revert back to 10.6 with minor hassle in case or problems (in theory, at least).
And the other... no 32 bit support any more, so goodbye Sylenth1, at least for now. Of course I'm guessing Logic 9 will happily co-exist with X, so I can always open it if I specifically need S1 for something... and I also guess there will soon be some solution for running 32 bit plugins on Logic X.
All in all, I'm cautiously excited at this point.

None, buy the full thing, as everything on the app store.telogic wrote:where is the upgrade price???
People (not just you, in general) tend to forget that the app store price is actually adjusted to the "no upgrade pricing" model. The full license is the same or less than a few years back an upgrade was.
Although, it would be very helpful if Apple were to give a heads up a month or two prior to releasing a new product.
Not defending Apple here, upgrades would be a welcome addition to the app store. I just doubt it would be any cheaper in the end.

I believe so, Logic 9 is still available for purchase in the appstore. So you can probably even still download it.skltr21 wrote:this may sound like a dumb question, but is there a way for me to keep a copy of logic pro 9 and a cop of logic x on my computer so that i can use both? i don't want to lose 32 bit functionality.

There are some exciting changes, but otherwise I have to agree. Wish they'd provide some skinning for the older look and feel, but that would go against the ALL OUR APPS ARE BELONG TO APPLE corporate dogma. The new Pro-Tooly faders are a disappointment, design wise.toitoi wrote:They killed the most beautiful and outstanding interface in the world that a software had. Hi Rob, I guess I was a little blunt, sorry for that. I would feel the same as you even though I knew this was coming.rob_lee wrote:Some of us are new to Mac and Logic and how Apples app store work but thanks for the tip.BDeep wrote:None, buy the full thing, as everything on the app store.telogic wrote:where is the upgrade price???

Yep, Melodyne's algorithms are superior to pretty much anything. The only problem is the hassle of transferring the audio to the plugin, and all the difficulties caused by it playing the audio, instead of the DAW... Because of that, I usually end up using Logic's flex audio for timing stuff. With its artifacts and all, but I'm already pretty good in keeping them to minimum.Sampleconstruct wrote: I always preferred Melodyne over Logic's Flex anyway because it produces much less artifacts when correcting timing issues, if it's the same with Flex pitch then...well...have to try it first but won't be upgrading for a while anyway.
Melodyne is a class on it's own with polyphonic note editing and the possibility to disconnect the harmonics of a sound from the root note and then mangle the harmonics around to produce something totally new.
I have been dreaming of a system where you could edit time & pitch directly in the DAW, using Melodyne's algorithms. Flex Pitch is definitely a step in the right direction. Celemony's ARA looks like an ideal solution, I just wish it would be implemeted in Logic. (One can always hope...)

I would wait at least 3 months for the early adopters to beta test the shit out of it.
There's no real reason to upgrade to X at this point unless you want Melodyne style audio shifting, a greasy new UI and yet another reason to sack your drummer.
It's basically the same thing without no 32 bit.
