I mean, seriously, if you are not allowed to talk about your "inside knowledge", then just don't do it. But *if* you talk about it, then you should better come up with some reliable source material instead of just another blog.

I know a few Apple employees firsthand and a former manager I work with who still has contacts within the company also reiterated it.

Beside's it's a common Apple MO to have everything focused in Cupertino. The assets of every company they've bought previously have eventually all wound up on infinite loop with teams either being imported from the bought out company or replaced with in house staff.

Either way, not a far streatch in logical thinking(couldn't resist) :p

Well, I happen to adore the ui of logic 9, because no matter how much stuff I have going in screen I never ever EVER get confused about what is where and what is what. See for example studio one copied logics look, but with a busy project I find studio one very hard to keep track of.. This is how I am feeling about logic x, and fwiw of course I understand we all have different ui tastes, but I happen to hate dark ui's especially ones made mainly of charcoal or black. I couldn't think of a worse colour. I am getting used to it but once again this is just logic 9 with new sounds, a couple new plugs, elastic pitch, folders and midi fx. That's it. Would be cool to know if the midi fx becomes an open Api to third party though.. That will definitely change a lot for the better I must admit. You know I am not all about fancy looks but functionality and ease on the eye.
So far its complete regret for me.. Oh.. Surprisingly, the vocal pitch shift quality is bad. Not as bad as studio one (sans melodyne) but not as good as cubase.. I don't like cubase beat time stretch or slice, or the stretch on any sound, BUT they have nailed the vocal pitch and stretch. I tested it against every algorithm known to mankind, even radius included in nectar, and cubase varipitch Is the absolute pick of the crop for vocal manipulation.

Also I wonder if appe have any beta testers. Click on an audio part, enable flex pitch, then double click to open the lower editor. Switch between the tabs track and file a couple of times, and watch logic crash.. All without using any third party plugin.. Ridiculous how such blatant crashes slip through the cracks, it took me all of five minutes to find
Sometimes I think just to go with PT and use what the work uses to collaborate, or cubase, but I always stick with logic. I think this time apple might have really lost me, no bs. It had to so more for a four year upgrade cycle, its just not good enough. Cubase is ahead in almost every department now.

I understand what you are saying. I wasn't aiming that at you. I just read that so many on different LogicPro forums, other music forums, really dislike the new look. I think it's much better because of the contrast of darker look and the other colour choices. For me it was to light with the old look, and I didn't like the old transport bar either. Routing and resampling, should be simple like it is in Live 9.
I haven't really tested Logic Pro X at all, just did a quick peek and liked the new look. They finally added a nice arpeggiator. But I bet it does not send it's notes out over midi. I could not find anything about that in the manual.
Let's hope they quickly address the things you discovered. The other problem with Logic Pro is that the updates have always been few, and also had a very long time between the releases. Logic Pro 8's major update was Logic Pro 9, and after that, not much really happened for a very long time. I hope it won't be the same thing with LPX.
I will wait and see how this develops, and follow what they are really planning for LPX.
No way I will buy it right now. I don't see the point of that at all. They should really get rid of the cheap and crappy ES synths, redesign the ES1, ES2, EXS24, UltraBeat. Implement the RedMatica technology NOW. It also needs proper polyphonic note detection ala Melodyne. A way to change colours of waveforms in audioeditor. This better happen soon, or Logic is not for me anymore. I don't feel like waiting 1 or 2 years for important features to appear.

Boxed version: Not at all anymore.

It's also rather complicated to transfer a downloaded version of Logic to another computer (without internet connection), as it usually needs to "find out" whether you've got Logic from the same Apple ID as your initial download. In addition, you'd have to copy a whole bunch of files (for samples, preferences, presets, etc etc) to make Logic work "normally" at all. I'm not sure about registration (it seems they trashed that in favour of their Apple ID approach), it might only come up with an annoying window at each start, but it might as well not work at all.

And yes, I totally agree that this sucks.

For instance, I'm just moving my music stuff to a new room. And I plan on installing a desktop computer (of whatever sorts...) there. No "regular" internet, just the connection through my mobile phone (which is rather slow and limited to 1GB/month, after that it switches to EDGE). In short: There's absolutely NO WAY I could ever download Logic and the additional content there.

And well, given the knowledge about how tough it is to copy Logic from one machine to another, I seriously wonder whether Apple really expects me to take my "studio" computer home with me, just to install Logic.
Plus, I'm even living in a rather technologized country. Imagine installing Logic in, say, Ivory Coast (should anyone want to compose a hymn about Didier Drogba...).

You might want to bring your rig to a local college library. They generally have a fast, free connection available. Not ideal, of course!

Well, all "local colleges" are probably further away from my new music room than my flat.

Seriously, not being able to download something to whatever external media and then install it to whatever machine is just a stupid idea. Even in these "everybody's cloud computing" days there's still quite some spaces where internet connections are either expensive or not available at all. Basement rooms might be a good example (even if my new room isn't in the basement), studios may not have a fast internet connection intentionally and what not.

I own and have tried just about every DAW out there... at the end of the day, I still prefer Logic for my DAW needs... Whatever they do to the interface, features added etc. if it's still Logic underneath I'm good. Glad to see there still working on it, myself. Looking forward to new computer and new Logic...

This pretty much sums up my fear, and is the main reason I do not support Apple in any form. The "always online" and "force to be online", or rather "everything handled through the App Store" is just not my cup of tea.

Unfortunately, Microsoft slowly goes the same route. Not touching Gaming Consoles, Google or Amazon here either.


This is why I actually prefer/support companies where I can do whatever I want.

Example Steinberg:
They offer download versions, but also boxed versions. I can therefore install Cubase on different rigs, while having one Elicenser only that I need to tag along. That's good.

In case of Reaper... granted, online distribution only, but I can also install it wherever I want, when I want, or move around stuff, do reinstalls, etc.

Nothing is locked to a certain "ID" like a video game "tag" or "ID" or whatever.



This is a huge backwards step that Apple did. But apparently, there are Apple users that don't mind. Then again, I now see history repeating itself: Logic dropping Windows, going full Mac only and the users being abandonned.

Now those that did not(!) jump on OSX Lion or Mountain Lion, or do not use the "AppStore" are initially left out. Amongst other things like dropping features or "plugin support", without even offering a Bridge.


I fear a huge Q/A session coming up by fellow musicians directed at my way, asking me all kinds of things about hosts, and which host I'd recommend.


Looks like there are no "big 3" anymore, just "big 2", and one of the big ones is pulling a lot of crap as well. But hey, at least they don't fork over their customers that much.

This makes me sad. I was kind of looking forward to Logic 10. But the outcome seems to be way worse than PT's and Cubase's upgrade cycles together.

My number one bug is still there: fades in flexed audio cause glitches. Nice work, Apple. To the guys who make Logic: have you ever actually tried making any music with it? Doesn't it ever bother you that once you flex audio, you can't use fades any more? Or you can, but you get pops, clicks, and other noises that shouldn't be there? Can't you understand that this is quite a serious problem?

But Drummer is nice.

The way I got through to them is to ask to get a refund.
Basically I just bought Mainstage 2, and hadn't had a chance to use it when Mainstage 3 came out.
The App store isn't set up for upgrades, but you can ask for a refund, and purchase Logic X. Warning! It's a total PITA, and may take a few times to get someone who understands what you're attempting to do.

You should be able to download Logic Pro 9 again, but not Logic Pro X.

Apps purchased on another Mac can be installed on other Macs by opening the Mac App Store on each destination Mac and signing in with the same Apple ID as you used to purchase the apps originally. Selecting the Purchases view at the top of the the Mac App Store window will display all apps which have been purchased with that account. Apps not yet installed on the current Mac will show an "Install" button next to the app name and description. Clicking the Install button will install the selected app on the current Mac without charging the account again. The apps installed in this manner will be placed on the current user's Dock and installed in the Applications folder.
