Hi Tim,

No rush or anything but just curious if you have any ETA on the second set. I know it takes a while to do that and its easy to get side tracked but just wondering if it's going to be available in the next couple of weeks.

well, i'd like to say it will be out within a couple of weeks. but at this exact moment i'm kind of taking a break from the 609 for sanity reasons. i'm sampling a reverb type thing at this exact moment, but i'm just doing the recording for that right now. there's other work after the actual sampling, and i'll probably jump back to the 609 limiter after i've done this sampling, and finish it. then jump back to finish this reverb thing.

so i'd LIKE to say part b will be out within 2 weeks, but who knows. i also want to have audio clips up on the site, for parts A and B when i release B, so that will take extra time right there. and i can't say if any kind of unknowns will pop up and interfere with progress on the limiter work...

Fair enough. Nothing is worth losing sanity over! Glad you are making the right choice to take a break. Sounds like hard work! Please take your time and good luck with everything in the meantime.

Falling more and more with this Cupwise library more by the day. For anybody on the fence on this program or Nebula, this is the real deal. Absolute love it. Very smooth and creamy without being "too much".

Looking forward to the second half of the Smooth 609 collection! It works well in series but that will be awesome to be able to use it just for the color and then use another compression in front.

what are you using it on?

glad you like it!
the limiter and pass-through stuff, is hopefully getting closer to being done. i've been working on it and its kinda there but there is a kink which i hope isn't too hard to smooth out. the only thing is that i think i might want to release another update for the first part before i release this one, and plus i want to go back and do audio demos for the first part (the comp) as well as the 2nd part (limiter) before i release part 2. so it will still take a bit of time, but HOPEFULLY it will be up soon.

I like it on the 2bus but really anything. Awesome on drums, bass, vocals, and even guitar.
glad you like it!

Awesome! Now I see why they sound so great. On top of having the likeness the real units, there's the painstaking sampling and tweaking process to boot. Good luck with all the kinds and updates to the first library. Biggest thing is that I am glad that this tremendous effort is not being abandoned because I know the update and the pass through programs and limiter will be amazing. [/quote]

i've just finished a VERY important update to this set. it's uploading right now, and later i'll mail links for the update to everyone who has bought.

this update does a lot of stuff. before, the attack control was scaled poorly. most of the range on it had little affect except the last little sliver towards the max range where a lot of change happened. now it's a smoother change across the control. much better.

shq and standard versions are closer to each other in terms of how their attack/release settings match up.

a lot of redundant and unnecessary duplicate programs are removed, and this makes the set look nicer in the menus. some other improvements to organization have been made.

the most important changes:
the programs were all very custom made (and still are), but i noticed that i had some details about how the harmonic samples were handled kind of bungled. the harmonics were still there but they weren't as dynamic as they should've been. that's fixed, and i think it gives a bit of a thicker sound.

potential artifacts have been greatly reduced. this one is big for me. sometimes you could get bassy artifacts added to the sound. they were already really low in level compared to your actual signal coming out, so they were hardly an issue, BUT i didn't like them because they could stack if multiple instances were used on the same audio and maybe eventually amount to something. now i think i have them dealt with nicely. thing is that these particular artifacts seem to show up with every neb comp i have, if there is over 1k. it seems to be a byproduct of doing compression with nebula. so, i'm noting to myself to go back and deal with them as needed in my previous comp releases and release updates for those, WHEN I GET TIME.

as i said, they were low enough that it's barely an issue, and only one person seems to have noticed them (not even sure if this person is talking about the same thing honestly), so it's not super-imperative that i fix the others (rayphlex and slick) right away. i always try to keep my stuff up to date but i also have to move forward with new things too, so be patient there. i really feel like this was removing something that you had to look at the things with a microscope (or actually use lots of filtering and spectral analyzers to see) to see, so it's a tiny thing, but at the same time having dealt with it makes me feel that these things are that much more perfected....

i also adjusted the way the gain reduction meter works, and i think now it's a lot better! i always maintained that the reduction meters in my stuff were accurate. well, they were, but only with a constant tone and the amount of gain reduction being constant. if there were changes in the amount, it would 'stick' at the peak amounts of GR for a few moments before dropping down. now it's pretty fluid and i think it makes them a lot more useful.

so, altogether i really feel that these updates take this set to a new level.

if you bought the set you should be getting the email in the near future. if you don't have it within a day of my posting it, contact me through the contact page at my site.

oh i almost forgot, two other things!
1) the demo for smooth 609A buscomp has also been updated. some people on mac were having an issue where it wouldn't work. well, i don't know if this will fix that but let's hope so! main thing is that the demo includes some of the updates that the main set got also (artifact redux, harmonic improvement, etc).

2) smooth 609A buscomp page at my site should have an audio demo mp3 up for you to check out finally! it's not up yet but hopefully it will be before the day is over, so if you don't have the set you might want to check it out. there should be a few different sections of a full mix, with each having multiple uses of the comp on various tracks, and of course you first hear them dry so you can compare the mix without any 609A to the mix with plenty of it.

Thanks Tim - really looking forward to trying out the update whenever I get the email. Great job keeping the plugs and customers updated - I really appreciate the details and understand many of them. :)

ok a bit of unfortunate news which i totally forgot to mention. someone brought it up in the acustica forum so i'll just copy/paste my response:

i couldn't get this update to remain backwards compatible with the previous versions and still have the improvements that are in the updates. the only way it would be possible to have the update installed with backwards compatibility would be for you to create another nebula xml/dll setup for the new version, and keep the old version in the setup you used for the projects you had.

hopefully everyone still has the original archives they downloaded off of me when they bought. if you have lots of projects using the old set that you will need to go back to, you'll have to keep the old set installed. if you still want the updated set for new projects then you'll have to do as i mentioned and have another nebula setup with the updated set installed in another folder.

it's really unfortunate that this is how it is, but there's really no way possible to keep the backwards compatibility and still get these improvements. sorry.

-so anyone who installs this update should first make sure they still have their old set, and unfortunately it's going to have to be left up to you how to deal with actually moving on to the updated set. there's really nothing i could have done to keep the compatibility.

Not to impose Tim, you've been very generous with your time but can you update us on your stance on the the pass-through programs for coloration, no comp and when it might be available? Would love to buy that program as well. Cheers Tim. Great work!

thanks ac222.
actually that's finished, and already released! as i mentioned, the pass-through was included in the limiter part:

Just finished a HUGE UPDATE to this very old compressor library of mine, which brings it up to the same standards as all of my other comps (except slick 9k which still needs an update).

I can't overstate how major of an update this is. Skins have been added for both N3 and N4. The comp and limiter sections have been combined into one product, and even actually into one program.

Check out the skin at my site, and look at the videos graciously put together by Max.

A lot of stuff has changed since this is the first update for this library in over 5 years! So here are the updates:

* library 're-branded' / renamed to S-609A mk2. also, in the past, the 'Smooth 609' version was sold as two separate parts- one for the compressor section and the other for the limiter. now those two parts have been combined into one product. and actually, both sections have been combined into one program (as explained next).

* limiter program has been combined into the compressor program! the ratio control goes from the sampled 1.5 to 6:1 ratio settings from the compressor (and 1:1 from pass through samples), and then if you increase from there you're going to the sampled limiter section. i think users of the actual hardware rarely seem to use the limiter section, and i do think the limiter programs were less useful than the compressor ones, so it makes sense to combine them together. plus it's cool because now you can smoothly transition from 6:1 compressor setting to the limiter setting, and get stuff in between that isn't possible with the hardware but can be interesting.

* new skins for both nebula 3 and 4. the nebula 3 skins allow you to easily switch between lite, full, and shq versions.

* programs completely rebuilt, using the newer compression programming methods i've been using since flucti-mew, and have been updating all of my old compressors to use. this general improvement involves some of the things listed below but also some other changes not detailed. this is a pretty major change, with the biggest improvement being that the artifacts that could be heard with bass heavy inputs in the past are now gone, and the attack is much more precise at faster settings.

* vectors completely rebuilt- impulses were re-rendered from the originally sampled tone sweeps, allowing me to re-edit them with the same techniques i use for new releases today.

* attack and release behavior was completely reprogrammed to match hardware more closely and it's much more accurate than in the past.

* harmonics levels were re-balanced, to be more authentic to the hardware. generally this means they're increased by several db.

* lots of the sampled dynamic steps for harmonics have been removed as they weren't needed. improves resource use. the comp programs have been optimized further, with a simplified but still authentic harmonic scheme in the programming of the .n2p program files.

* pass-through program has been reduced down to 5k because hardware didn't have any harmonics beyond there. comp/limiter SHQ programs were reduced down to 7k from 10k.

* all of the extra programs (alt versions, obsolete fast attack version, and external sidechain versions which nebula doesn't support anymore) have been removed. they just added clutter and didn't really add much, and removing them lets me focus on perfecting the main compressor.

* the old '1k' '5k' and '10k' program choices have been replaced by 'lite' 'full' and 'shq', like i've been doing for years now with new compressors.

* programs formerly used 100% feedback in the detector but i've adjusted it to use a little feedforward signal also, because i think it gives results closer to the hardware where i have the ratio set now.

* the main old programs didn't have a look ahead control since they used 100% feedback, which means the look-ahead wouldn't work. i've added look-ahead now, and it works a little, since there is now some feedforward signal.

* added makeup control. because this is a feedback detection compressor, increasing the output can increase the amount of gain reduction. the hardware doesn't work that way but it can't be avoided in nebula due to internal routing. this is originally why i left the control out of the programs but i think it's better to have it than not.

* replaced the old 'dry' control that just added some dry signal back in to the output, with a new 'wet' control that actually acts as a typical wet/dry mixer control. it's way better and easy to get parallel compression now. really nice.

* manual largely re-written, and a new skin install manual added.
